Wedlock: Love and Marriage at the Cook County Jail

By Darryl Holliday. Illustrated by Erik Nelson Rodriguez.

We consider it a sort of genre-bending -- journalistic reporting with comic books. Graphic journalism.

Our first story follows one Chicago woman through her marriage at the Cook County courthouse to her fiancé, an inmate at the county jail who will eventually be tried for first-degree murder. His next court date is Oct. 13, 2011.

All illustrations and narrative are pulled from a flow of events during this year's annual Department of Corrections ceremonies. All of the words spoken by people in this story are actual words spoken by actual people. Everything else is up for interpretation.

This is an amazing idea but it's really hard to read the tiny writing, even at full screen size. Any way to make it a PDF download or something?

Lisa Wardle / September 28, 2011 1:43 PM

News in comic form? What an excellent idea! This comic does a superb job, through both text and images, of conveying the varying emotions of the story.

Kelly / September 28, 2011 2:11 PM

Sorry Shira! We realized it was an issue and we're trying to figure out how to solve it...

Wow. What an incredible idea! I salute you guys for pulling it off. It looks fantastic, and I can't wait to read it. Mazel tov!

Dan / September 28, 2011 6:24 PM

This is AMAZING, I NEED MORE!

Timothy Schuler / September 29, 2011 1:18 PM

This is fascinating. I agree that it's difficult to read, but that can be gotten around, I'm sure. I'm really excited to see this evolve and the response from the Gapers Block community!

Mom & Nia / September 29, 2011 6:29 PM

This was sooo awesome, we enjoyed it. It was fun to read and look at... can't wait to see how it plays out! As stated already, the writing was slightly difficult to read but, we made it work!

Andy Keil / October 1, 2011 12:38 AM

This came across really well. Kudos.

Devin / October 3, 2011 10:26 AM

I think this is a great way to get youth (and adults) interested/engaged with social issues in a new way. So interesting to see tone and meaning through a visualization of a news story!

Nana / October 5, 2011 7:15 PM

Genius(es)!!

Andrew / October 28, 2011 2:54 PM

Super original idea Darryl and Erik. I love the detail and want to see more!
