This Week Chicago Reading Series Host Their Final Events of 2013
As host of Two Cookie Minimum reading series, I wanted to acknowledge all the other great reading series by mentioning those that end their 2013 seasons this week.
First, this Tuesday, December 3, Two Cookie Minimum has its December Ender at the Hungry Brain, 2319 W. Belmont, at 9pm. The lineup includes Lee Gaines; Allison Fabes, editor of The Insomnia Propagandist zine; Shaun Rouser, author of short story collection Family Affair out on Red Bird Chapbooks; Mahjabeen Syed, fiction writing student at Columbia College; and Gapers Block Book Club's own editor, Lara Levitan. There will holiday cookies available, so get there before they're all gone.
Also Tuesday, Tuesday Funk is back in the upstairs bar at Hopleaf, 5148 N. Clark St. This month, the readers are G.P.A. (Greatest Poet Alive) Jocelyn Geboy, David Schneiderman, J. Michael Grey, and, in his final appearance as a Tuesday Funk co-host, William Shunn. Gapers Block editor and publisher Andrew Huff co-hosts, and next month Book Club contributor Eden Robins takes over co-hosting duties. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30.
Next, on Wednesday, December 4, mainstay series Reading Under the Influence closes the year with their reading themed "the End" at Sheffield's, 3258 N. Sheffield Ave., 7pm.
The series lives up to its name as featured readers take shots prior to reading twice, once from their own work, and second from a celebrated published work on the night's theme. Readers include Mark Cronin, author of Gigantic Failure; Joseph Bates, author of Tomorrowland; Renee Zambo, and Ben Tanzer, author of Orphans. Trivia questions are peppered throughout the night with chances to win books and drinks. There's a $3 cover.
Take your pick Thursday, December 5 for one of two great readings. The Gumbo Fiction Salon at Galway Arms, 2442 N. Clark, welcomes featured guest Deb R. Lewis. There is also an open mic. If interested, sign up at the door before the 7pm start. This is a 17+ show, with a $2 admission for students and $4 for non-students.
Also on Thursday, Story Club is back at the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan Rd, at 8pm. The theme is "holidays," and featured performers include writer Jen Bosworth, comedian Kelsie Huff, and series regular, puppet Chad the Bird. There is an open mic to begin the show, with sign-up beginning at 7:30pm. There is a $10 suggested cover.
Stop by these lit events and help them close out 2013 right, and let us know if we missed anything!
