The Chicago Independent Radio Project (a.k.a. CHIRP Radio) presents their First Time reading series at Schuba's. Combining the written word with music, each piece read will reference a specific artist or piece of music followed by a live band performing the song. Tonight's theme is First Car. Featured readers are Josh Caterer, Susan Messing, Erin Shea, Jim DeRogatis, Matt Spiegel, James VanOsdol and Robbie Fulks. Tickets are $10; proceeds to benefit the CHIRP. Schuba's, 3159 N. Get your slurp on at this weekly fundraiser for area food-related charities tonight at the Hideout, 1354 West Wabansia, from 5:30-7:30pm. A new team of chefs and bakers donate the soup and bread; you donate the money.
Villains, 649 S. Clark St., hosts Get Off the Couch, a monthly showcase where four musicians get on the old Victorian couch on the stage and take turns performing round-robin style. After each has performed four songs, the headliner takes the stage for a half-hour set. This month features Jon Langford, along with Rachel Eve, Carry Kanno and host Sam Wahl. Show starts at 8pm. $5 at the door; 21+.
