Takin' It To The Streets: Urban International Festival @ Marquette Park, 6/19
If you ask most music loving folks what kind of music they like, you almost always get the response "I like a little bit of everything." What is lacking in this "little bit of everything" is that sometimes a huge percentage of the globe is left out. Music is being made in almost every corner of our planet and so much of it can go unheard or worse; world music can be seen as something only appreciated by people similar to Tim Robbin's character in High Fidelity.
Takin' It To The Streets: Urban International Festival is a chance to change what music fills our ears and experience a little bit more of everything. It is also a chance to get outside, explore some new music as well as get involved with some social justice causes. The day long event is the nation's largest Muslim lead music and arts festival, features over 100 performers from all over the world and is produced by IMAN, the Inner-City Muslim Action Network, a community based non-profit that works for social justice, delivers a range of social services, and cultivates the arts in urban communities.
The fest takes place Saturday, June 19th from 9am-9pm in Marquette Park and features a dazzling day of Hip-hop, Sufi, Soul, Reggae and DJ sets, as well as a day of diverse activities. Included in the massive line up is qawwail singer Amjad Sabri, Moroccan afro beat star Malika Zarra, and Hip Hop master Mos Def.
Marquette Park is located at 6734 S. Kedzie Ave. The event is free, although donations are strongly suggested. For more information contact IMAN at (773) 434-4626.
