Pulling Strings: For classical music in Chicago, you got a guy - October 2013

I'm on Twitter now, kids. Somehow, the world didn't end. @Cello_guy
Bruce Brubaker at PianoForte Foundation and Mayne Stage
Acclaimed pianist and one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary repertoire, Bruce Brubaker makes a rare Chicago appearance in two performances. Brubaker — known as much for his playing as his teaching — has collaborated with some of the biggest names in new music, including Nico Muhly, Philip Glass, Missy Mizzoli, and Meredith Monk. Brubaker's program at PianoForte Foundation features Muhly's "Drones & Piano" and Philip Glass's "Mad Rush." He will also discuss aspects of performance, listening, and minimalist music. The following night, Brubaker presents a full solo recital at Mayne Stage. Saturday, October 5, 7:30pm: PianoForte Foundation, Studio 825, 410 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. Tickets are $20 general, $15 for members, $5 for students. Sunday, October 6, 7pm: Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Morse Ave. Reserved seats $20, general admission $15.
On the 200th anniversary of Guiseppe Verdi's birth, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Riccardo Muti reprise their 2009 Grammy-winning performance of the Requiem. The one-night-only concert is sold out in Symphony Center, but you can catch all the bombastic music and soaring voices for free during the live simulcast on the giant new screen in Millennium Park. Bring a blanket and a bottle of wine and enjoy Verdi's largest non-opera work. Free admission. Thursday, October 10, 7:30 pm. Pritzker Pavilion, Millennium Park.
You may know mandolinist extraordinaire Chris Thile as frontman for The Punch Brothers, or for his radical bluegrassy collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Béla Fleck. But did you know he possess some pretty mean classical chops? Fresh off his recent release of Bach Sonatas and Partitas (which is awesome), Thile will present a solo recital at Northwestern that will surely include material from that album, along with anything else he feels like playing. Tickets are $28 for the public, $12 for students. Tuesday, October 15, 7:30pm. Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston.
Programs, artists, and prices subject to change. Tickets subject to availability.
