Do Bike Lanes Make Bikers Less Safe?

A biker in New York City makes the case in this video that bike lanes actually make biking less safe, sparking a debate in the bike community in New York.

The crux of the problem is this: urban biking is great unless to many people decide to do it. It's a shame, but it's true.

While the transition phase is probably painful, don't forget that if the new bikers are biking instead of driving, there is still a significant decline in congestion that would make the roads safer for more bikers--in other words, the increase in bikers would still be a net decrease in congestion.

maybe not filming yourself while you're riding your bike on city streets is a good start to making cycling more safe for everyone..
