Red Stars Seek Bounce Back

Hoping to recover from their first loss of the season, the Chicago Red Stars will take on FC Gold Pride this Saturday, 7:30 p.m., at Toyota Park in Bridgeview in Women's Professional Soccer league action.

The Red Stars, 2-1-1 in their inaugural season fell to Sky Blue FC (1-2-2) of New Jersey 2-0 on May 10 at Toyota Park. The Stars only managed three shots on goal and the first one didn't come until the second half. The lackluster performance received a blunt assessment from Red Stars head coach Emma Hayes.

"I don't think any one of our players had a good game today," said Hayes. "You can't win games if your players are under performing. Unfortunately, we didn't do some basic things, got exposed and were punished for it. I don't think it was one single area, I thought it was everywhere."

FC Gold Pride is 2-3-1 after falling to St. Louis Athletica 1-0 on May 9 at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.

In other Red Stars news, four members of the squad will miss the team's May 23 game against Saint Louis, but for a good reason: they'll all be members of the U.s. Women's National team that will play Japan in a pair of games May 20 in Frisco, Texas and May 23 in Sandy, Utah. Midfielders Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Lindsey and defender Marian Dalmy will return to action June 3 for an away game against the L.A. Sol in Carson, California.

One other Red Star standout is also missing from action, but with an equally compelling reason. Kate Markgraf is expecting twins this season, but she's still managing to give commentary on the team on their website.
