White Sox Trade Deadline Report

The 2009 trade deadline has come and gone and a lot of big names were moved. It was a very active deadline with trades a plenty taking place. The Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers both made deals to improve their respective clubs. The Twins acquired Orlando Cabrera from Oakland and the Tigers picking up Jarrod Washburn from Seattle. It appeared that the White Sox and Kenny Williams were going to stand pat with what they have.

Well if you think that is the case with Kenny Williams, think again. While everyone was looking at Roy Halladay to be the big name moved during the deadline Williams pulled off a shocker by bringing the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the South side of Chicago.

Stop me if you've heard this before. The Sox tried to acquire Peavy back in May with him ultimately turning down the Sox sighting "family" as the reason for vetoing the trade. Now with the Padres occupying the cellar in the National League West and no chance of making the playoffs they decided now was the best time to trade their ace. While the trade sounds all well and good it does come with a catch.

Peavy hasn't thrown a pitch since June 9 because he is currently on the disabled list with a torn right ankle tendon. He suffered the injury running the bases back in May in a game against the Chicago Cubs. The Sox are hoping he returns in August down the stretch to help with a possible playoff run. This is a gamble by the Sox, if it pays off Kenny Williams looks like a genius, if it not then Williams looks like a fool for trading for an injured pitcher. It is a 50/50 chance that Williams is willing to take. While he didn't sell the farm they did give up an awful lot for a guy who may not pitch at all this season.

If and when he does come back how effective will he be and what difference is it going to make facing American League hitters vs National League hitters? Peavy has stated in the past he didn't have a desire to pitch in the American League. It is going to be interesting to see how he handles pitching in the very hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field, which is dramatically different from the cushy dimensions of Petco Park in San Diego.

In the long run of things this isn't just a rent-a-player situation. Barring future injuries or a massive fire sale on the South side they have him locked up until 2012 with an option year in 2013. A rotation of Buehrle, Peavy, Danks and Floyd doesn't look too shabby. It definitely puts them in the top five best rotations in the American League.
