A Wednesday for Giving and Giveaways
So, it's official. Winter is here, and seemingly for good, concluding that strange few days where I saw numerous individuals walking around in shorts and flip flops, in December. To boost your spirits as the official winter doldrums roll in, I've highlighted a few events to partake in where you can contribute to your sense of holiday cheer.
If you purchase anything on Bloodshot Records' website today, Chicago's respected label for alt-country musical stylings, you are entered to win the last of the Waco Brothers designed flasks in stock, and a limited edition copy of their record, New Deal. All you need to do is purchase items from the Bloodshot Records holiday sale and write "Waco Bros" under the comment section as you complete your purchase. Simple as that!
Schubas is giving away a pair of tickets for the Other Lives and Indians show on Friday evening. Comment on the relevant status on their Facebook page and you could gain the chance to see this indie folk group play some of their hauntingly melodic tunes, with Indians as the opening act.
Looking to go to the Of Montreal show this Sunday evening at The Metro? Enter to win tickets via the venue's Instagram contest - Instagram a picture of "how you listen to Of Montreal" and utilize the hashtag #OMMETRO and you will not only be entered to receive a pair of tickets to the show, but you can also win CDs of Daughters of Cloud and Paralytic Stalks, and a silkscreen print thrown in as an additional bonus. Thursday is the deadline to enter their contest.
And now, it is time for giving. Bloodshot Records will be hosting their annual Stuffed Animal Drive, benefiting Nicholson Academy, educating kindergartners through 8th graders in the Englewood neighborhood. Drop off stuffed animals at their offices, located at 3039 W. Irving Park Road, anytime from 10am-6pm on weekdays until December 11, with an additional collection period at the Hideout's Holiday Sale on December 12.
In addition, you can participate in The Metro and Smart Bar's canned food drive, benefiting the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Bring any canned or boxed food items over to The Metro office, located at 3730 N. Clark Street, or any Metro show during the month of December, and donations will be taken to the Greater Chicago Food Depository by food drive partners, CHIRP Radio.
It's a gloomy realization that winter is here to stay, but add some warmth to your heart by participating in some events where you can give and receive on this wintry Chicago day.
