Voluntarios de la Esperanza is a non-profit group dedicated to helping underprivileged youth in Santiago, Chile. Local photographer Christine Mladic is leaving the city for South America to devote her time to this cause and, as a grand send-off, is holding a benefit at the Empty Bottle. This will be a chance to collect information on the organization and also donate some funds to their cause, but it'll also be a chance to listen to some local bands -- Beardog, Big Buildings, Modern Temper and Shelley Short will be there -- and purchase works by some of the city's artists. Molly Shanahan / Mad Shak presents a free work in progress showing of My Name is Blackbird, this morning at 10am at Links Hall (3435 N Sheffield). Choreographer Shanahan describes her work as "mysterious and gothic. The protagonist/performer exists within a state of flux and the movement transforms from fluid and angular and constrained...the atmosphere is suspenseful and poetic." Blackbird, a unique collaboration between Shanahan and composer/musicians Andrew Bird, Mark Booth and Dave Pakovic, will premiere in April 2007. This morning at 10am. Burns, a Mississippi-born guitarist and blues singer, has played with a dynamic group of musicians ranging from Smokey Robinson to Bonnie Raitt to Jeff Beck & The Yardbirds.
