SOFA @ Navy Pier

SOFA Chicago -- the Sculptural Objects and Functional Art Expo -- runs Friday through Sunday in the Festival Hall on Navy Pier this weekend. Wear out your eyes and your feet viewing selections from 99 galleries and countless artists. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 students/seniors, or $25 for all three days. Hours are:

Laura Baxter @ MCA

Alien @ Fillm Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center is running a series of science fiction films through the end of the year. This week's film is the 1979 Ridley Scott classic Alien (a new print of the original film, not the recently re-edted version). The film screens tonight at 6:00 PM, and again on Tuesday the 14th at 6:00 PM. Tuesday night's screening will also include a lecture/discussion by SAIC professor Jim Trainor. Hot Chip @ Metro

DFA dance-pop act Hot Chip plays the Metro tonight, with support from Brooklyn's Shy Child and Toronto's Born Ruffians. $16, 18+. Doors 8pm, show 9pm.

Opening: Against the Grain @ Aesthetic Eye

Chicago Hackathon 2006

The Chicago Perl Mongers and The Perl Foundation present the Chicago Hackathon, a three-day weekend of round-the-clock Perl-related events. Perl programmers can get help on their own projects, help other programmers out, and meet with a number of programmers from the Chicago area and elsewhere. MS Cocktail'N for the Cause

The Hideout, in conjunction with the Hyde Park Art Center, presents "Music for Tomorrow's World: A Dedication to Sun Ra." The headlining ensemble for the occasion features Thurston Moore on guitar, Rollo Radford on electric bass, Avreeyal Ra on drums, and Jim Baker on ARP synth.
