Permanent Records In-Store

Live performances in tiny record shops makes us feel like we're really on the cutting edge. Permanent Records is hosting one such performance tonight at 7 p.m. with experimental ambient duo The Binges and a true drum and bass act The Black Ladies. A few more bands may be joining in too. It's free, so come on over to Permanent for what may or may not make you feel cutting edge too. (Permanent Records is at 1914 W. Chicago Ave.)

The Roots with special guest Lupe Fiasco @ Chicago Theatre

One of the best live shows in music comes to town as The Roots come to the Chicagop Theatre. Hometown success story Lupe Fiasco guests. A show sure to be loud, kinetic, and amazing. Tickets available from Ticketmaster. Word is that the show is pretty close to being sold out.

Chef Didier Durand @ Chicagoland Flower and Garden Show

Chef Didier Durand of Cyrano's Bistrot will demonstrate preparing a dish made with fresh, all-natural (and potentially home-grown) ingredients. The demonstration starts at 1 pm and is part of the Garden Gourmet series at the Chicagoland Flower and Garden Show, taking place from March 10-17 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center at 5555 N. River Rd. in Rosemont. Visit the show's website for more information.

Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials @ B.L.U.E.S.

Alligator Records' resident "#1 houserocking band" makes its second appearance in Chicago, taking over the stage at B.L.U.E.S. They'll be featured Friday and Saturday, March 16th and 17th. Showtime is 9:30 and ticket prices are TBA as of this writing.

Chicago Hackmeeting @ Flowershop

Daisychain and Busker present Chicago Hackmeeting, a two-day meeting of hackers, activists and artists. Scheduled events: discussion of the One Laptop Per Child project; circuit bending workshops; live performance and screenings; and much more. The Chicago Hackmeeting happens today and tomorrow at Bucker's Flowershop (2159 W. 21st Place); see the Daisychain Website for full details.

2007 St. Patrick's Day Parade

This annual downtown dye-the-river-green celebration, always scheduled for the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day, is actually going to be held on St. Patrick's Day this year. Don't forget to pick up the Parade Book and to thank the Chicago Journeyman Plumber's Union Local 130UA for sponsoring. Saturday, March 17, 12 Noon, Balbo and Columbus. The parade will proceed north on Columbus Drive and the viewing stand will be located in front of Buckingham Fountain. Free.

Handmade Market @ Empty Bottle

Handmade Market spotlights local craftiness for its monthly show at the Empty Bottle. Check out the latest in jewelry, accessories, stationery, and other cool stuff from noon to 4:30 at 1035 N. Western. Free to browse, 21+ (kids must be accompanied by an adult, because it is a bar, after all).

The Egyptian Lover @ Tini Martini

Too many years after the fact, old-school electro DJ and producer Egyptian Lover makes his Chicago debut at Tini Martini tonight. In recent years, he's resurfaced and been putting out records again, often working with Detroit electronic artist Jimmy Edgar, who'll also be in the house to spin a deejay set. Egyptian Lover will be performing with Jamie Jupiter. The appearance is part of the Hefty Records-hosted event series Your Formula Life. Dark Wave Disco's Trancid will also be helping out.
