The Junior Board of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago hosts this evening of fashion and fun to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS. Make a Statement: Design for the Cure features red fashion concepts from up-and-coming Chicago designers, an open bar and a raffle with fancy-schmancy prizes. The Neo-Futurists kick off their 6th annual It Came From The Neo-Futurarium series of dramatic readings of bad film scripts tonight with the 1980 Olivia Newton-John rollerskating classic Xanadu. And it's a sing-along event! Get all your ELO-fanatic friends to attend! The reading kicks off tonight at 8:00 at the Neo-Futurarium (5153 N. Ashland, at Foster). Tickets are $10, $8 for students w/valid ID. The International Centre for Women Playwrights and Around the Coyote present Chicago HER-RAH 2007: A Festival of the World's best Women Playwrights and Their New Plays. Teh festival will feature staged readnigs of new, production-ready plays written by women from all over the world. The hope is that the festival will provide a platform for these plays to reach full production by professional theatres. All-festival passes can be purchased for $15; tickets for individual performances are $5 each. Admissions is on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are not accepted. Not that he needs much help in the marketing department (his enemies practically do all the work for him), but documentary film director and cultural lightning rod Michael Moore will appear in Chicago today to promote his new film, Sicko. Moore's target this time is America's corporate health care industry and its governmental enablers.
More rally than promo tour stop, today's event will include Moore and speakers from health advocacy groups like Heath Care for All Illinois (HCAI) and others. The speeches begin at 4:00 p.m. at Daley Bicentennial Plaza (337 E. Randolph, just east of Millennium Park by the old skating rink). Afterwards, attendees will be invited to march to the Blue Cross / Blue Shield building a block away. Presumably not for tea and cookies.
