Quimby's presents an appearance by Zach Huelsing and Matt Kessler, publishers of the school-themed zine Works Cited. To celebrate the premiere issue they will be at Quimby's tonight, taking people's pictures and then defacing them, middle-school style. The altered photos will be posted on the site of Eye Rocket Books, publishers of Works Cited. The photo extravaganza happens tonight at 7:00 PM; be there or be non-defaced. Quimby's: 1854 W. The Bruiser Review, Chicago's newest literary magazine, hosts a “coming out” party tonight in Wicker Park.
Writers Billy Lombardo, Megan Sielstra and Brian Costello will give readings. Bruiser wants to be "the magazine for those on the outside who want in and those on the inside who love it there." The reading takes place at the Debonair Social Club, 1575 N. Milwaukee Ave. 8 P.M. until 11 P.M.
Nikki Giovanni is the winner of this year's Carl Sandburg Literary Award for lifetime achievement from the Chicago Public Library Foundation. Ladyfest returns to Chicago with a four-day festival of art, music, film, spoken word, and activism. Tonight's opening night extravaganza features an art show, film and video shorts, and performances by Clare Chase, the Winks, Anni Rossi, and Diane Cluck, all at Heaven Gallery, 1550 N. Milwaukee. Festival passes are available for $30 or you can pay $7 at the door for this event.
Local author Achy Obejas (Memory Mambo) stops by Women & Children First to celebrate the release of her latest work Havana Noir.
