Panel on Gender, Human Rights, and Media @ Film Row Cinema

Commemorating International Women's Day, the Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women & Gender in the Arts & Media at Columbia College Chicago presents this panel addressing how media shapes our understanding of human rights. Jamaica Kincaid @ Northwestern

Esteemed author Jamaica Kincaid comes to Northwestern University to present the 2008 Leon Forrest Lecture, "On Writing." Kincaid's writing has been greatly influenced by issues of race, gender, poverty and mother-daughter relationships. Having emigrated from Antiqua at the age of 17, Kincaid went on to find success as a staff writer at the New Yorker and is now a professor at Harvard University. Her books include Lucy, The Autobiography of My Mother and Mr. Potter, among others. Free and open to the public at 5pm in Harris Hall 107, 1881 Sheridan Rd. in Evanston. Urban Bush Women/Compagnie JANT-BI @ the Dance Center at Columbia College

Senegal's all-male Compagnie JANT-BI and the U.S.'s all-female Urban Bush Women collaborated for two years to produce Les ecailles de la memoire (The Scales of Memory), a piece "about the importance of place and community, urban and rural life, and the diversity of the African and the African-American experience." The collaboration yields movement vocabulary that combines JANT-BI's nature-inspired technique with UBW's black-vernacular-influenced contemporary movement. AMEBA @ Ruth Page Center for the Arts

AMEBA is Chicago's acrobatic and aerial dance company that uses suspended fabrics, ropes, bungee cords, swings, and rope ladders to choreograph images in the air. On March 6-8 and 13-16, they will present On the Edge, a collection of new works expressing "a variety of instances where our human nature brings us to the edge." $15-20. Funny Ha-Ha @ Hideout

Reading series Funny Ha-Ha is all new this month, with Chicago Tribune blogger and columnist Eric Zorn, Perfect From Now On author John Sellers, Schadenfreude, columnist and "Interview Show" host Mark Bazer, and films by Steve Delahoyde. World Kitchen Learning Series: Kitchen Confidence

Tonight begins "Kitchen Confidence," a four-week class series where you will learn how to approach your home cooking as a confident, professional chef. The class will run 6-8:30pm each Thursday, and end March 27. The class is held through the World Kitchen learning series sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs. Gender, Human Rights, and Media

The Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media are celebrating International Women's Day by hosting their second Gender, Human Rights, and Media program. Join them at 5:30 pm tonight at Film Row Cinema (1104 S. Wabash, 8th floor) to hear a people with expertise ranging from reporting on Hurricane Katrina to South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission discuss the complicated role that media can play in influencing and reflecting our understanding of human rights.
