Free concert: Dapp Theory (jazz/poetry/hip hop) @ Chicago Cultural Center

The Chicago Department for Cultural Affairs rolls out another of its 11 FREE programs of live avant-garde jazz and experimental music, taking place between February and May tonight. This performance, at the Claudia Cassidy Theater of the Chicago Cultural Center (77 East Randolph Street), is a jazz/hip hop/poetry/funk concoction spearheaded by pianist Andy Milne and known as Dapp Theory. It starts at 7 p.m., and it's free.

Ecologist/Photographer Mark Moffett @ Field Museum

One of only a handful of people to earn a Ph.D. under E. O. Wilson, Moffett is a modern-day explorer with more than a little luck on his side. He has accidentally sat on the world's deadliest snake, battled drug lords with dart guns, and eaten scorpions and spiders. For him such risks are worth it, as part of his mission to find stories that make people fall in love with the unexpected: insects, frogs, and other of nature's small wonders. The Mekons @ Schubas

Thodos Dance @ LUMA

Chicago company Thodos Dance will perform tonight at LUMA as part of an on-going series of dances inspired by Andy Warhol's Silver Clouds, currently on display. In addition to tonight's FREE show, Thodos will reprise their improvisational performance on Saturday (Saturday's show requires $6 museum admission). Tonight's performance begins at 7pm at LUMA (820 N. Michigan Ave). Both admission and performance are free.

Heroes, Statesmen, Philanderers, and Fools: The American Presidency in Popular Culture @ Chicago History Museum

Explores the American presidency as it has been depicted in television and film – from fictional characters like West Wing’s Josiah Bartlet to fictionalizations of real presidents in Birth of a Nation and the internet sensation JibJab. Although primarily intended to entertain, Chicago History Museum historian, Sarah Marcus’ depictions will also offer criticism, praise, and alternative visions of contemporary political life. $10, $8 for Museum members. 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. 1601 N.
