Graphic Thought Facility: Resourceful Design @ Art Institute

he exhibition—curated by Zoë Ryan, the museum’s Neville Bryan Curator of Design—showcases the work of the eponymous London-based graphic design studio, Graphic Thought Facility (GTF). With an installation commissioned by the Art Institute from GTF, this is the firm’s first solo museum exhibition, on view through August 17 in Gallery 24. 111 S. Drew Gress' 7 Black Butterflies @ Chicago Cultural Center - FREE show

The Chicago Department for Cultural Affairs keeps March jumping with the sixth in a series of 11 FREE programs of live avant-garde jazz and experimental music. This performance, at the Claudia Cassidy Theater of the Chicago Cultural Center (77 East Randolph Street), features free jazz bassist Drew Gress and his ensemble 7 Black Butterflies, featuring longtime NYC jazz stalwarts Tim Berne (saxophones), Tom Rainey (drums), Craig Taborn (piano) (virtually a reunion of Tim Berne's own Paraphrase band), and Ralph Alessi (trumpet). 7 p.m. and free.

Movies Without Cameras @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center presents CameraLESS Films, a programs of films made without cameras. Included in the program will be films made by Georges Méliès, Stan Brakhage, Len Lye, and may other experimental filmmakers. The program screens tonight at 6:00 PM. Panther @ The Abbey

Recent Kill Rock Stars signees Panther bring their funk-fitted pop stylings to the Abbey this evening. Chicago's enigmatic, wtf musical bafflers Detholz! are also on the bill, as are local acts U.S. Girls and Slow Gun Shogun. 3420 W. Grace, at Elston. Doors at 8pm and show at 9pm. DJ Rehka @ SmartBar

The past year has been a big one for NYC bhangra maven DJ Rehka. She celebrated the ten-year anniversary of her monthly "Basement Bhangra" dance party with a big blow-out at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, and she commemorated the occasion by releasing her much-lauded debut mix-CD. A heap of media buzz followed, as did a national tour that saw Rehka playing an engagement at SmartBar back in the Fall of 2007. Tonight she'll be back for a return appearance, bringing the bhangra bounce as she takes to the decks in a headlining DJ set. Bhangratheque and hometown DJ Jimmy Singh gets dhol-driven riddims start rolling in the opening slot. Doors open at 10pm, and admission is $10. 3730 N. Clark St.

Fred Krupp @ Conrad Sulzer Regional Library

As part of the 2008 Chicago Matters series, Growing Forward, the Chicago Public Library welcomes author Krupp, longtime president of the Environmental Defense Fund, who discusses and sign his new book, Earth: The Sequel, The Race to Reinvent Energy and Stop Global Warming. Krupp (and co-author Miriam Horn) explain how to harness the great forces of capitalism to save the world from catastrophe. He introduces us to the innovators and investors who are reinventing energy and the ways to use it in order to stop global warming. Bernard Magnier Lecture @ Alliance Francaise

Magnier, a journalist and specialist in African literature, has worked many years with Radio France International and manages the collection "Afrique" at editions Actes Sud. He speaks about famous authors who write in French though they were not born in France. Three recent French literary prizes, le Prix Goncourt, le Prix Renaudot, and le Prix Femina, were presented to American, Congolese, and Canadian authors. Presented by the French Consulate in Chicago. A night of creative fun, food and drink. Chicago artist Adelheid Mers presents a live mapping event of the Resource Center's programs, impact, and possibilities. Queer Exclusions: Sexuality and U.S. Citizenship @ Chicago History Museum

Examines the controversies dealing with immigration and naturalization that have become increasingly divisive in recent years. These debates have tended to ignore the role of sexuality in U.S. policies. Cultural historian Siobhan Somerville traces how questions of sexuality, in combination with race, have shaped how the U.S. government has distinguished between "citizens" and "aliens." She explores how lesbians and gay men have navigated U.S. immigration and citizenship laws, as well as how these policies have actively "queered" particular migrants, regardless of their actual sexual orientation.
