Open Book Swap

Looking for a good place to unload all those books you've read and are ready to pass on? (And, let's be honest, you probably need to make some more room on your shelves for all the new books you've purchased, too.) Pack them in some sturdy bags and come to the Open Books Book Swap today at the North Lakeside Cultural Center. Donate what you've brought, then browse everyone else's contributions and you can leave with as many books as you brought in. Free from 10am-2pm at 6219 N. Sheridan Rd. Lincoln Square Apple Fest

Fall means it's apple season, so get started on your apple eating and cider drinking at this annual festival. It's at Giddings Plaza, 4731 North Lincoln Avenue from 8 am to 5 pm. Free.

Lakeview East Festival of the Arts

The 4th annual version of this art fair features over 140 juried artists, as well as musical entertainment. It takes place along Broadway between Belmont and Roscoe on Saturday 9/13 from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 9/14 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Adventures in Modern Music Festival @ Empty Bottle

World Kitchen: Party Planning 101 @ Gallery 37

Make your next party rocking at the Party Planning 101 cooking class, which will be held today from 11a-2pm. This class is offered as part of the World Kitchen learning series offered by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and will be held at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, 66 E. Randolph Street. Admission is $30 and pre-registration is required. Please wear non-skid shoes and bring your apron!

UNESCO "Culture of Peace" Discussion

SGI-USA, a lay Buddhist organization, hosts a day of discussions of UNESCO's Culture of Peace Initiative today from 1pm to 4:30pm at 1455 S. Wabash Ave. Hiro Sakurai, past president of the Committee of Religious NGOs at the UN, will speak on steps we can take to "Build A Culture of Peace." In addition, community builders, religious organizations and educational institutions that share the vision of peace will have exhibits and participate in dialogue. Music and dancers will entertain. Renegade Craft Fair

This year's Renegade Craft Fair will feature hundreds of the hippest crafty vendors from across the land, all laid out once again on Division Street in Wicker Park between Damen and Hermitage. Come out and browse, shop and also groove to music by Northern State and Califone. FREE! The fair runs 9/13-9/14, noon-10pm.

Southern Cooking @ Chicago History Museum

Bike the Dog

According to their website, Bike The Dog is "Chicago's Premier Gastronomic Cycling Challenge." They're inviting bikers of any skill level to join them for an almost-eighteen-mile trek through the north and northwest sides, sampling the wares at nine quintessential Chicago hot dog locations. The ride starts at 10 AM today at the Vienna Beef Factory Store. It's a pledge-based event, with raised funds benefiting the family of Stella Ackerman, a two-and-a-half-year-old living with a rare blood disorder. More info.
