Chicago Gourmet @ Millennium Park

Think of this as a Taste of Chicago with a heftier price tag and more upscale eats. Chicago Gourmet will have food samplings from a rock star roll call of the city's top chefs (Graham Eliot Bowles, Rick Bayless, Carrie Nahabedian, Mindy Segal) and literal Top Chefs (Stephanie Izard, Dale Levitski), as well as cooking demonstrations, seminars and wine samplings. Tickets run from $100-400.

Apple Cider Century

Head to Three Oaks, Michigan (only 60 miles from Chicago) for the Apple Cider Century, a one-day 25, 50, 62, 75 or 100-mile bike ride around the beauty of our neighbors to the east. An All-you-can-eat breakfast and spaghetti dinner are included with registration. Thousands ride in this event, why not join them?

Charles Billington @ Book Cellar

As the North Side puts its faith in its favorite team yet again, Charles Billington makes an appropriately timed visit to the Book Cellar tonight to read from and discuss his new book about the Cubs Wrigley Field's Last World Series. The book chronicles the 1945 team using statistical analyses, interviews, inning-byinning accounts of important games and more. Free at 2pm at 4736-38 N. Lincoln Ave. Call 773-293-2665 for more information.

8th Annual Oktoberfest @ St. Alphonsus

Come celebrate Oktoberfest at St. Alphonsus church in Lakeview. This church, founded by German immigrants in 1882, really knows how to put on an Oktoberfest -- complete with oom-pah bands, brats, dancing, and, of course, plenty of German brews. The party goes on all weekend, starting Friday night 9/26, from 5-11pm, Sat. 9/27 11am-10pm, Sun. 9/28 noon-9pm. St. Alphonsus is located at 3000 Lincoln Ave. (at Wellington).

Seabird

Ask any member of LoveLikeFire about why the band has become so strong, so quickly, and the answer will sound a bit like a confession: The music is a compulsion, they say. An inevitability. An obsession. In 2008, the four San Franciscans intend to pour that passion into a full-length debut disc. For now, though, LoveLikeFire is doing what it's always done: Playing shows wherever and whenever. Writing songs constantly. Clinging strongly to the idea that it's better to be good than lucky.
