World Kitchen: Rooting for Ginger @ Gallery 37

Today's class (11am-2pm) will teach how you to use ginger in an array of dishes. "Rooting for Ginger" is offered as part of the World Kitchen learning series offered by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and will be held at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, 66 E. Randolph Street. Admission is $30 and pre-registration is required. Please wear non-skid shoes and bring your apron!

Global Drum Project @ Harris Theater

The names involved in the Global Drum Project speak for themselves: Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo, four of the most well respected percussionists on the planet. Mickey Hart is best known as the drummer for the Grateful Dead; Zakir Hussain is a virtuoso tabla player; Sikiru Adepoju is a Nigerian drummer known as a master of the talking drum; and Giovanni Hidalgo is one of the best conga players to walk the earth. The combination of the four should be nothing short of rhythmic transcendence. Presented by the Old Town School at the Harris Theater, 205 E. Randolph.

NAMAH & Zarbang @ Dance Center of Columbia College

The mission of Banafsheh Sayyad and her company NAMAH is to bring Iranian (and world) performing arts to a broad audience. This weekend's performance is a rare opportunity to see Persian dance outside of Iran, where women are banned from dancing in public. The dancing will be accompanied by Zarbang, a Persian and Middle Eastern percussion and woodwind group.

Smithsonian Folkways history @ Old Town School

The Old Town School of Folk Music hosts author Richard Carlin in a discussion of Smithsonian Folkways Records, the record label that featured everything from percussion to field recordings to spoken word. There will obviously be some record-playing going on with the discussion. Admission to this discussion is free! Barbara Fairchild Book-Signing @ Green City Market

Bon Appétit Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild will be signing copies of the new Bon Appétit Fast Easy Fresh Cookbook at the Green City Market, at 1750 North Clark Street, from 9:30 to 11:30 am. Home Movie Day @ Cultural Center

The Chicago Film Archives sponsors Home Movie Day at the Chicago Cultural Center; 78 E. Washington St. Bring in your homespun video goodness and they will show it on the big screen. From 3pm to 6pm, CFA archivists will inspect your home movies (call 773-478-3799 to reserve a spot, or just walk in and wait), then from 6pm to 10pm they'll screen home movies from attendees and the CFA collection. Free.

This Country's F$cked @ Lakeshore Theater

Schadenfreude and Gayco team up to present This Country's F$cked, the first annual political comedy festival, sponsored by the Crossroads Foundation and Lakeshore Theater. The comedy show will feature Mark Bazer (RedEye), Bassprov (Annoyance), Matthew Hollis and the Power of Cheer, Yuri Lane (beatbox), Claudia Wallace (Second City), Jet and Holly (IO) plus many, many more. This show will include live (on tape) performances from Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama. There will be two shows tonight, at 8pm and 11pm, at the Lakeshore Theater, 3175 N. Broadway. Tickets are $20.

Chicago International Film Festival

The Chicago International Film Festival runs until October 29 at several theaters across the city. Box office is at the AMC River East 21 at Illinois & Fairbanks and the AMC at 600 North Michigan; you can also buy tickets online.
