Danish writer Peter H. Fogtdal reads from his new book, The Tsar's Dwarf, at Chinaski's, 1935 N. Damen, tonight at 7:30pm. Well-known in Denmark with 12 books in print, this is Fogtdal's first novel translated into English. Free, 21+.

"Terrific Tamales" is offered as part of the World Kitchen learning series offered by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and will be held at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, 66 E. DJ Dave Roberts and Kristine return to Subterranean for Planet Earth, an evening of New Wave dance music. In honor of the season, tonight's Planet Earth is a New Wave Masquerade Ball, so come dressed up in your finest masquerade get-up. Music, dance, tables of merch for sale from Laurie's Planet of Sound, a celebration of DJ Dave's birthday at midnight, and an appearance by the "Prince Charming" dancers! Cooper-Moore is a musician that defines enigmatic. A virtuoso pianist, he often eschews the ivory keys to play a number of homemade instruments. Tonight, he will be appearing at the Velvet Lounge as part of a national tour that will take him from the east coast, to Oregon, to Mexico, and back. Bringing with him an arsenal of instruments, you can expect a tour de force of music, a unique brand of ecstatic music that combines elements of gospel, folk, jazz, gospel, and blues. A solo Cooper-Moore tour is such a unique occasion that New York based label AUM Fidelity has released a limited edition collection of his solo recordings that you can pick up at the show. Part the MCA's Saturday Short series, Zines: The Art of Intervention explores intersections between art and language in this self publishing-oriented workshop. Starting Saturday, November 1, Green City Market moves from their warm-weather Lincoln Park spot to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
