CSS @ Metro

If Brazilian electro-pop band Cansei de Ser Sexy (better known to us in the States as CSS) sound like they belong in an iPod commercial, thats because they've probably already made you buy one. Their single "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" was featured in an ad for the Touch last year. Tonight they come to the Metro to show off some hot music from their latest album, Donkey. You should go just to see what Lovefoxxx is wearing.

Ssion opens. Show starts at 7:30pm. All ages. Tickets are $18.
3730 N. Clark St.

Best Latke in Chicago Battle @ Spertus

In the imaginary Alaskan city of Jewish refugees that Michael Chabon created for "Yiddish Policemen's Union," a latke was a beat officer, cleverly nicknamed after the round, flat top of their uniform hats. In our not-so-imaginary city, a latke is still what it has always been--a potato pancake. So, when the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies says it wants the best latke in Chicago, it doesn't mean they're looking for the best and greatest among our police department. They're looking for yummy potato pancakes.

Email your best latke recipe, along with a little write-up of "why this latke is the best in Chicago" to latkes@spertus.edu. If your recipe is selected by "a committee of Jewish Kitchen Divas" as the greatest, you'll be invited for a live latke battle tonight against chef Laura Frankel, who spearheads the Wolfgang Puck at Spertus.

Recipe competitors get to attend the latke battle and brunch for free, while spectators pay $45 for buffet brunch, latkes (of course!) and recipes starting at 11am. The real show--the latke cook-off--will start at 12:30pm, and will be judged by Ina Pinkney (chef & owner of Ina's on Randolph) and Aaron Freeman (comedian). The slots for recipe competitors are limited. For reservation and more information, call 312-322-1757 or go to the event page.

The Nut Tapper @ Athenaeum Theatre

Organized by local tap teacher Reggio McLaughlin, The Nut Tapper features not just tap but other sorts of dance, including flamenco, clog dancing, etc. The show happens this afternoon at 4pm. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or from the Athenaeum box office. Athenaeum: 2936 N. Southport. (773) 935-6860.

Turntablist Workshop @ Old Town School

The Old Town School of Folk Music presents the latest in a series of workshops designed to give students a two-hour introduction to a musical style or dance method. This afternoon, it's the return of the highly popular Turntablist workshop, taught by Danny the Wild Child, a battle DJ who has performed with DJ Qbert. There will be a lecture portion, after which you'll get to work on basic techniques on the wheels of steel. Bring a notebook and a tape recorder. The workshop costs $40, starts at 1pm and will probably fill up quickly, so sign up now! Old Town School of Folk Music: 4544 N. Lincoln. (773) 728-6000.

The Streeters @ SubT

Officially they're calling themselves Melodramatic Pop. But really The Streeters are a good dollop of old school country, punk and a solid dose of rock-a-billy. Certainly just what the doctor will be ordering once you get through your weekend. Also sure to go well with whiskey. And if you happen to ride a bike on a regular basis, you might recognize a few of the folks up there on stage, from oh... the neighborhood.
