If you like jazz, or you just like being outside on a Chicago summer afternoon, then make your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art for "Tuesdays on the Terrace." Have a seat by the band on the terrace, or bring a blanket and some friends to the lawn and take in the sounds of some of the city's most talented jazz musicians. Tonight's artist is Corey Wilkes. 220 East Chicago Ave. 5:30pm-8pm. Free.
Learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy and create a finished work on a Japanese fan in celebration of the Tanabata (Star Festival). Certified Calligraphy Instructor Yoshimi Tanaka will lead this workshop, which is tonight from 6-8pm at the Japan America Society of Chicago (20 N. Clark St., Suite 750).
