Silent Summer Film Festival: Harold Loyd's Girl Shy

The Silent Film Society of Chicago's Silent Film Festival continues this evening with a screening of Harold Loyd's 1924 film Girl Shy. Lollapalooza means that everyone and their mother is in town, and probably want to make the most of their time here beyond an hour in Grant Park. They boys of Dark Wave Disco host a calvacade of stars at the Congress on Friday night, with Italian remixers du jour Crookers headlining and a mysterious Major Lazer (Soundsystem) just underneath them (be prepared for an absent Diplo, Switch or both)? Rounding out the bill is buzz-peaking Kanye protege Kid Cudi, Philly rap diva Amanda Blank, Italians Bloody Beetroots and Chicagoan Willy Joy. Tickets run $25. When you have this many people, your afterparty has to start a little early, so doors open at 8.

North American Wildlife @ Family Room

The Post Family hosts North American Wildlife, "an assembly of conceptual artists working across all plat forms of visual, sound and multimedia installations," at The Family Room, 1821 W. Hubbard St., tonight from 6pm to 12:30am. Free.

Chicago Artists' Coalition Gallery Opening

Chicago Artists' Coalition inaugurates its new gallery space at 2010 W. Pierce St. with a group show of member artists, including Anthony Adcock, Maricarmen Pizano, Jennifer Bisbing, Loren Robare, Robert Brasher, Richard Shipps, Meredith Dytch, Michael E. Smith, Julian Gordon, Jun-Jun C.Sta.Ana, Juliette Herwitt, Jeff Stevenson, Diane Huff, Allison Svoboda, Barbara Krol, Darren Thompson, K.A. Science Chicago brings their Labfest! to Warren Park (6601 N. Western Ave.) today from 11am-3pm. Held rain or shine, this event features several hands-on science-related activities and crafts for the entire family. Free.

Oak Park Library Annual Book Fair

The Friends of the Oak Park Public Library are holding their 39th Annual Book Fair. Come peruse 100,000 books, from childrens' to cooking to history to romance and more. Hardcovers are priced at $2 and paperbacks are priced at $.50. The fair starts today, 6pm-10pm, with a $5 entry fee (there will be no entry fee on Saturday), at Oak Park River Forest High School, 201 N. Socille Ave. in Oak Park. Lollapalooza @ Grant Park

Chicago's own Lollapalooza rocks Grant Park again for a fifth year. Tonight's headliners are Kings of Leon and Depeche Mode. The music festival runs from 11am to 10pm. Three-day and single-day passes are available on Lollapalooza's website.
