The 2009 Chicago Outdoor Film Festival finishes this evening with one final screening: Sydney Pollack's Tootsie, with Dustin Hoffman and a great supporting performance from Bill Murray. The film will be shown at Butler Field in Grant Park (at Monroe and Lake Shore Drive). Admission to the film is free. The films begin at sunset, but you'll probably want to arrive earlier to pick out a choice spot. See the Outdoor Film Festival website for a complete schedule of films.
Summer is quickly trailing off (as it seems to have just arrived), and Holiday Shores show up just in time to share their beach-worthy indie rock. The group hails from Tallahassee, Florida, so they know a thing or two about rocking at the beach. Catch them tonight at The Empty Bottle opening for hometown groups Distractions and Scale Model. Tickets are only $3 ($7 at the door). 9:30pm. 1035 N. Western Ave. 21+
If you like jazz, or you just like being outside on a Chicago summer afternoon, then make your way to the Museum of Contemporary Art for "Tuesdays on the Terrace." Have a seat by the band on the terrace, or bring a blanket and some friends to the lawn and take in the sounds of some of the city's most talented jazz musicians. Tonight's artist is Mike Jeffers. 220 East Chicago Ave. 5:30pm-8pm. Free.
"Project Runway" designer Shernett Swaby will be opening a new boutique right here in Chicago. I had a chance to look at her designs, and you won't want to miss this event. Get your goods before everyone else in the city snags them. Come join her for cocktails and couture at 1933 N. Damen Ave. tonight from 6 to 10pm.
Pressure Cooker, a documentary film about the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program, will be screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center tonight at 6:15 pm. More information can be found in Drive-Thru.
How should the region plan for the year 2040? This summer, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) will hold dozens of free public workshops called GO TO 2040 "Invent the Future". Information you contribute at these meetings will help CMAP develop a preferred scenario that will best reflect the region's desired future. Tonight’s workshop takes place from 6-8pm at the Grayslake Village Hall,
10 South Seymor St., Grayslake, IL. Visit goto2040.org for more information and to register.
The weekly Re-Thinking Soup series starts up again today (not exactly soup season, but "Late Summer Minestrone" is on the menu) at UIC's Jane Addams Hull-House Dining Hall (800 S. Halsted) from noon to 1:30pm. Kicking off this year's series is a lecture and discussion facilitated by Joshua Viertel, Slow Food USA's newly (and first-ever) elected President.
