Facets Multimedia presents the second session of Facets Night School, midnight screenings of classic and cult movies with discussions about each film. Tonight's film is the 1994 undead classic Cemetery Man. Facets employee Patrick Ogle leads a post-film discussion. The movie screens tonight at midnight, and tickets are only $5 (available through Ticketweb). Facets: 1517 W. Fullerton.
The WCR All-Stars take on Baltimore's Charm City Roller Girls tonight at the UIC Pavilion (525 S. Racine Ave) at 7pm. Before that, the new "B" team--The Second Wind-- will play Cleveland's Burning River All-Stars in a preliminary bout starting at 5:40pm. Tickets are $20 GA and $40 VIP (track-side) seats. The 5th annual Chicago Messenger Prom takes place tonight at Cobra Lounge, 235 N. Ashland Ave., from 7pm to 2am. You don't have to be a bike messenger to attend, but prom attire with "biker flair" is encouraged -- otherwise you might not win the Best Dressed contest. Music will be provided by DJ People in Cars, local country roots artist Al Scorch, and Disco Unusual Social Club. $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon cans (while supplies last) and $2 PBR drafts help lubricate the festivities. Today the "Pielitical becomes Personal" at Equality Illinois' Pie-Throwing Contest, a benefit for the LGBT organization which runs 2-5pm at Sidetrack (3329 N. Halsted) in the front courtyard area. Politicians and local names, among them Windy CIty Times publisher Tracy Baim, Ron Huberman of Chicago Public Schools, Alderman Tom Tunney, and state legislators Greg Harris, Sara Feigenholtz and Deb Mell will allow you to yes, throw a pie in their face for charity. But you have to have the winning bid, so come armed with cash.
D. Rider is one of Chicago's more unique bands, including Todd Rittmann of the US Maple and a bevy of other veteran local musicians that all produce an explosion of sound and music. If you've never seen this band in action, you're in for a treat. Between the saxophones, drums, and strange noises produced by Rittmann himself there's hardly a moment where you won't be entertained.
The band plays at the Bottom Lounge (
1375 W Lake St.) tonight, 9pm. Also playing is Chicago's favorite punk marching band Mucca Pazza and Reds and Blue. 18+. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased in advance here.
Every so often, Argonne National Laboratory (9700 S. Cass Ave., Argonne) opens its doors to the public to showcase what they do. They'll be hosting one of these rare open houses today from 9am-4:30pm. Along with around 100 exhibits on energy, physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, and more, they'll also have tours of the Advanced Photon Source, the the Center for Nanoscale Materials, ATLAS--the Argonne Tandem-Linac Accelerator System--and the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator. Chicago music journalist Jessica Hopper reads from her new book Girls Guide to Rocking today at The Hideout. Her book is really for anyone: girls, boys, kids, adults--anyone curious about the how-tos of starting a band.
