World Kitchen Learning Series: Now You're Cooking

The "Now You're Cooking" class, part of the city's World Kitchen learning series, will get you cooking like the professionals. This is part of a four-class series that will continue October 8, 15, and 22. Class runs 6-8pm at the Gallery 37 Center for Arts at 66 East Randolph, admission is $30 ($100 for all four), and registration is required.

Stop Making Sense @ Navy Pier Imax

Chicago Public Radio and Sound Opinions present a screening of the classic 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense as part of Sound Opinions' continuing series of rock'n'roll film screenings. The event happens tonight at Navy Pier's Imax Theatre at 8pm (doors open at 7:30pm). Advance tickets are $11 ($10 for students and WBEZ members) and can be purchased online.

Theater Oobleck @ The Chopin

Check out the low-tempo folk stylings of Eric Ziegenhagen, part of Cabaret Oobleck, a showcase of the theater company's regulars, irregulars and friends. Hosted by BoyGirlBoyGirl's David Kodeski, the show starts at 7:30pm in the downstairs lounge of The Chopin Theater, 1543 W. Division. Manic Street Preachers @ Metro

A year after former bandmate Richey Edwards was presumed deceased after going missing in 1995, Manic Street Preachers released an album of Edwards' lyrics set to new music. Journal for Plague Lovers is one of the strongest records of the Welsh rock band's much-heralded career. After many years away from the US, the Manics return for a short tour this fall. They'll play Metro (3730 N. Clark) tonight at 7:30pm. All ages. Tickets are $22.50.

Dirty Needles Craft Night @ The Hideout

If you've been craving exposure to glitter and yarn, and you'd really like to play with them in a bar, then this is for you. Dirty Needles, an established Los Angeles craft outfit, has expanded their membership to Chicago, and their first club meeting is today. Bring a small project - knitting, crochet, needlepoint, scrapbook... or volunteer to help with the projects the other members are working on. For you knitting virgins, there are rumors that a bona fide knitting instructor will be present. Oh, and I think boys are allowed, too. 5:30-8pm. The Hideout: 1354 W. Wabansia.

The OTHER Dance Festival @ Hamlin Park Fieldhouse

Since 2002, the Chicago Moving Company has been providing an annual venue for Chicago dance companies to present their work, and for Chicago audiences to sample more than a dozen different artists and groups at The OTHER Dance Festival. This weekend's performers are: Peter Carpenter, Hedwig Dances, The Humans, Ayako Kato/Art Union Humanscape, and The Seldoms.

Empowerment Art: Interactive and Collective Works @ New Wave Cafe

This event, part of the Logan Square ARTicipation tour, will feature work by Chicago ARTillery artists. On display will be paintings by Victor M. Montanez; Tracy Kostenbader; Camilo Quitze Quintana; Rene Ricardo Montanez; Iris Iris Pasic, Julia Rocholz and photographs by Chrystal McGrew. There will be music by El DJ Rebel X and Camilo Quintana. The audience will have the opportunity to interact with artists and can manipulate the paintings to discover various protagonists and themes. David Lida @ Stop Smiling

David Lida, author of First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, Capital of the 21st Century, will be at Stop Smiling Storefront to give a presentation based on his book. Lida has lived in Mexico City for 15 years and his book is record of his personal experiences, while arguing that the city is a model city of the 21st century and is a example of what the "urban future" will look like. Former Chicagoan Larry Marder's career spans many regions of the comic book world: the artist of the award-winning Beanworld has also been the Marketing Director for Chicago's Moondog's Comicland, Executive Director of Image Comics from 1993-1999, and President of McFarlane Toys from 1999-2007. This panel discussion focuses on the arts scenes in St. Louis, Detroit, and Chicago and is part of the Fourth Annual Chicago Calling Arts Festival.
