UIC hosts Re-Thinking Soup, a free weekly lunch where participants eat soup cooked from ingredients found at Hull House's urban gardens and chat about an assortment of topics. Event runs today from noon-1:30pm at Hull House, 800 South Halsted.
For the 8th year in a row, Second City hosts this 24-hour improv benefit to provide presents for needy children. Second City improvisers and alumni will perform improvisational games, scenes, monologues, songs, and whatever weirdness they come up with. Special guest performers include Jeff Tweedy, Robbie Fulks, and Nina Nastasia. The event takes place in the Second City e.t.c. (1608 N. Wells St, 2nd Floor of Piper's Alley), with doors opening at 5:45 PM, and the show starting at 6 PM. It winds down at 6 PM tomorrow. Using the components of over 1,600 teabags donated by friends, Georgina Valverde creates a body of work exploring the potential for small actions to manifest form, beauty and meaning. Three ballsy bands play the Bottle tonight. Like my alliteration? We Were They headlines what is supposed to be their last show tonight, Chicago Stone Lightning Band and Hollows open. Admission is $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Show starts at 9:30pm. 21+. The Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western.
Letters to Santa, a 24-hour marathon featuring music and improv performances by a bevy of musicians, comedians and more starts (see below!) at 6pm tonight at Second City, 1608 North Wells. Raffles and an auction will also be held. Your $15 admission benefits needy kids in the city.

Quimby's Bookstore is hosting an off-site event called the Cabinet of Curiosities at the Museum of Contemporary Art (220 East Chicago Avenue) at 6pm in Puck's Cafe. The Cabinet of Curiosities series is a curated "variety show." Artists and performers featured in this month's theme, Dystopias vs. Enchanted Forests, include Ed Marszewski (Lumpen, Proximity, Co-Prosperity Sphere), Kate Sheehy (puppeteer), Joe Mason (pop culture specialist), Oscar Arriola (street art archiver and documentarian), and Jon Resh (Viper Press, Amped).
At the County building at 118 N LaSalle, the County Board will be meeting, and at least one Commissioner expects fireworks.
