The Treasure of Ulysses Davis @ Intuit

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, is hosting an opening reception tonight for the Ulysses Davis exhibition that debuted at the High Museum in Atlanta, and has since traveled to the American Folk Art Museum in New York and the Menello Museum of Art in Florida. The title comes from the artist's explanation of why he disliked parting with his work: "They're my treasure. If I sold these, I'd be really poor."

Davis, who passed away in 1990, was a barber by trade who made wood sculptures between customers. His work includes portraits of U.S. Presidents Washington through George H.W. Bush, who was in office at the time of his death. Being a Georgia native, Jimmy Carter figures prominently in his oeuvre; Davis rendered the 39th President's image no less than five times.

Intuit is located at 756 N. Milwaukee Avenue. Tonight's reception runs from 5pm to 8pm, and admission is free. For more information call (312) 243-9088 or visit Intuit
