Facets Night School: Day of the Dead

Facets Cinematheque presents their Night School series of midnight screenings and lectures. Tonight's film is the third film of George Romero's zombie series, Day of the Dead from 1985. The film will be preceded by a lecture by Facets employee Patrick Ogle. Facets Night School screenings are $5 (free for Facets members!), and include an educational packet of notes and articles for each class. The Smoking Popes @ Reggies

The Smoking Popes play an all ages show at Reggie's Rock Club tonight. The band was a staple of the Chicago Punk/Pop scene in the 90's, broke up in 1999 and reunited in 2005. They released their latest album, entitled It's Been A Long Day, on February 16th. The Copyrights and The Brokedowns open.

Taste of the Neighborhoods Tour

The City hosts a tour today of the eats representing selected neighborhoods around Chicago--Greek on Halsted, Italian on Taylor, South side BBQ, Middle Eastern in Albany Park--and you can join them! The Taste of the Neighborhoods tour series meets monthly; destinations are announced a few weeks before the tour, so contact the City to find out what's on the menu for today.

Pictures and Sounds @ Film Studies Center

WHPK presents Pictures and Sounds, its annual show of "live, re-imagined soundtracks to experimental and silent film," tonight at the Film Studies Center, 5811 S. Ellis Ave., Cobb Hall Rm. 306, starting at 8pm. Mist, Dog Lady, Trauma & Nate Wooley, and Brett Naucke will perform. Free.

Dame-Nation @ The Portage Theater

Chicago Girls Rock presents Dame-Nation, an evening of homegrown hard rock, featuring seven female-led bands. VH1's Ambre Lake presents the lineup: Whiskey Blonde; Losing Scarlet; The Hannah Ford Band; SAGE4, F.H.O.D.; Dead Man's Wake; and headliner High Gloss Black. Celestial Navigations @ Gene Siskel Film Center

Employing the archival skills honed during the excavation of over 40 full-length albums, Celestial Navigations marks The Numero Group's first foray into the world of cinema. The 45 films collected have been transferred and color corrected from the original 16mm prints, along with fully remastered sound. Special features include a 30-minute documentary on Jarnow's creative process, as well as film playlists designed for both children and adults. The show starts at 8pm. For tickets, click here. Jacques Tati Double Feature @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center presents a month long retrospective of the films of Jacques Tati. Today they present a double feature: Play Time at 3pm; and Parade at 5:3pm. Kings of Convenience @ Metro Postponed until 6/10

Beautiful Norwegian harmonizers Kings of Convenience return to Chicago after a much too-long hiatus from U.S. touring with a show at the Metro. Tickets $30. All Ages. Doors 6pm, Show 7pm. Troy Taylor @ Quimby's Bookstore

Troy Taylor presents The Murder and Mayhem in Chicago Series at Quimby's at 7pm. Every Chicago neighborhood has at some point been home to violence, gang influence, and corruption. Local Author Troy Taylor airs all of Chicago's dirty laundry in this five-part series, chronicling the infamous destruction of the Great Chicago Fire, the most shocking crimes of the 1800's and the rise of the mafia during Prohibition, leading to Al Capone's eventual domination in the Windy City's underworld. Two-Hour Comedy Hour @ Gallery Cabaret

This week's Two-Hour Comedy Hour, a weekly standup comedy showcase hosted by Trey Mowder, features standup comedians Mikey Manker, Steve O. Harvey,
Emily Galati, Joe Kwaczala and Mike Wiley. This free show features a different five-person lineup each week. There's no cover for the 21+ show -though a $5 donation is accepted - and it runs from 7-9 pm at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley (near Western and Milwaukee, just off the Blue Line stop). Guests are encouraged to arrive early.

"Bittersweet History of Chocolate in France" @ Lexington College

Join local sugar artist Mark Seaman today for this lively discussion on the history of chocolate in France. Be regaled with sweet tales of kings and queens and learn how chocolate goes from bean to bar. Also, indulge in confections prepared by the French Pastry School of Chicago. The talk takes place from 10am to noon at Lexington College, 310 S. Peoria St. (two blocks west of Halsted, just south of Jackson). Parking is free in the adjacent college garage. Polar Adventure Days

Don't forget to dress warm for the fifth annual Polar Adventure Days series, an all ages event featuring a real dog sled team, ice sculptures as well as winter tales told by story tellers. Louder Than A Bomb Screening @ Columbia College

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Louder Than A Bomb, Chicago's youth poetry festival, Young Chicago Authors are presenting a special "fine cut" screening of the feature length documentary made about the festival, tonight at Columbia College Film Row Cinema (1104 S. Wabash, 8th Floor) at 6pm. After the screening, the Emmy-winning Chicago filmmakers Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel will be on hand for Q&A. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the door.
