Facets Night School: Save the Green Planet

Facets Cinematheque presents their Night School series of midnight screenings and lectures. Tonight's film is the Korean serial killer/kung fu/black comedy Save the Green Planet from 2003. The film will be preceded by a lecture by Facets employee Michael Smith. Facets Night School screenings are $5 (free for Facets members!), and include an educational packet of notes and articles for each class. South Shore Opera Company of Chicago Salutes Black History Month

The South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr., welcomes the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago tonight at 5:30pm for its Black History Month concert. This musical tribute will feature selections from pianist/composer George E. Cooper, who will be accompanied by singers Robert Sims, Kimberly Jones and Cornelius Johnson. Tinariwen @ Old Town School of Folk Music

Tinariwen will once again be playing at the Old Town School of Folk Music this weekend for two back to back concerts today at 7pm and 10pm, and a third concert Sunday at 7pm. William Eggleston @ Art Institute

William Eggleston is known for legitimatizing color photography as an art form. His first American retrospective is traveling and it opens today at the Art Institute. The exhibit will also show lesser-known works like his early black-and-white prints and video recordings.

Lori London Trunk Show @ White Chicago

The Lori London trunk show continues this today from 10am to 6pm. Stop by White Chicago (222 W. Huron Street) to peruse the latest trends in veils and bridal accessories. Guests will receive a photo strip from The Original Traveling Photo Booth and 10% off any Lori London purchase.

Laura Veirs @ Corbett vs. Dempsey

Singer/Songwriter Laura Veirs performs an acoustic set at Corbett vs. Dempsey today. With a personal songwriting sensibility and fantastical lyrics that emanate from her native Portland, Oregon, Veirs has carved a unique niche for herself. She'll start her set at 5:30pm. The event is free, but space is limited so go early, and be prepared to sit on the floor. It will be worth it! Corbett vs. Dempsey Gallery is located at 1120 N. Ashland Ave. #3.

Jim Trainor Animation @ threewalls

Chicago animator, Jim Trainor will combine animations of Max and Dave Fleischer, the creators of Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons with Oskar Fischinger, abstract German film artist. threewalls says, "The effect, we hope, will be like sitting on an overstuffed couch, Louis Armstrong on the Victrola, paging through a book of Kandinsky paintings with Jean Harlow on your lap."

Doors open at 6pm (119 North Peoria Street), program starts at 7pm. There is a suggested donation of $5.

Open Books Warehouse Sale!

Love to read but hate buying expensive books? Come to the Open Boxes Book Sale at Open Books this weekend, today and tomorrow. This is your chance to buy used books at really low prices--not that they weren't already low. Children's books and softcovers are $1 and hardcovers are $2. You can also buy a tote bag and fill it to the brim with books for only $25. Take this opportunity to comb through over 10,000 titles, you're sure to find something great.

MEET THE OSCARS Chicago @ The Shops at Northbridge

Practice the acceptance speech you know you've been writing since you were a kid at MEET THE OSCARS Chicago, an exhibition brought by Kodak to The Shops at Northbridge, 520 N. Michigan Ave. You can hold and have your photo taken with a real Oscar statuette, learn more about Chicago's own R.S. Owens & Company, which makes the statuettes, and check out Oscars previously awarded to Bette Davis, DuPont Film Manufacturing and Eastman Kodak. This event is free. 10am to 7pm on Level 1 in front of Nordstrom.

Two-Hour Comedy Hour @ Gallery Cabaret

This week's Two-Hour Comedy Hour, a weekly standup comedy showcase hosted by Trey Mowder, features standup comedians Danny Kallas, Prescott Tolk, Marty DeRosa, Michael Sanchez, Eliot Rahal, Cameron Gillette and Kevin Hogan. This free show features a different five-person lineup each week. There's no cover for the 21+ show -though a $5 donation is accepted - and it runs from 7-9 pm at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley (near Western and Milwaukee, just off the Blue Line stop). Guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Presidential Dining @ Kendall College

Chicago Foodways sponsors a lecture on the history of dining in the White House today at Kendall College, 900 North Branch, from 10am-noon.
