Facets Night School: The Elephant Man
Facets Cinematheque winds up their Night School series of midnight screenings and lectures. Tonight's film is David Lynch's classic The Elephant Man from 1980. The film will be preceded by a lecture by Facets employee Phil Morehart. Facets Night School screenings are $5 (free for Facets members!), and include an educational packet of notes and articles for each class. IN>TIME @ The Cultural Center
IN>TIME is a Chicago performance series of local, national, and international artists. Developed as a collaboration between DCA Theater and the Chicago Performance Network, the event features practitioners working with ideas of time and body, crossing the performing body with text, objects, sounds, visual art, and technology. This year's showcase event is co-sponsored by The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Performance Department and features performances by Justin Cabrillos, Angela Ellsworth, Every House has a Door and Jessica Hannah. This event will take place at the Cultural Center (78 E. Washington) tonight from 6 to 9.
Two-Hour Comedy Hour @ Gallery Cabaret
This week's Two-Hour Comedy Hour features a special treat: It's host/producer Trey Mowder's two-year standup anniversary, so he's headlining the show. Standing in as a host is Mike Sheehan, and the lineup includes Drew Michael, Danny Kallas, C.J. Toledano, Kevin Lee, J.D. Greving and Daniel Shore. This free show features a fresh mix of comedians each week. There's no cover for the 21+ show -though a $5 donation is accepted - and it runs from 7-9 pm at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley (near Western and Milwaukee, just off the Blue Line stop). Guests are encouraged to arrive early.
Politics of the Black Body Lecture @ Intuit
Using Ulysses Davis's series of presidential portrait busts as a point of departure, art historian Amy Mooney, Ph.D. will explore the politics of black representation in art and visual culture from the 19th to 21st centuries today at Intuit. From the recent controversy over Sheppard Fairey's depiction of President Obama to the stereotypes found in Sigmund Krausz's 1896 publication Street Types of Great American Cities, Dr. Mooney will consider the ways in which U.S. social institutions employed the black image as a means of furthering opposing political agendas of uplift and oppression. Sharing an excerpt from her forthcoming book, Portraits of Noteworthy Character, Dr. Mooney will present the historic framework that continues to inform our expectations of representation. Dr. Mooney is Associate Professor of Art History, Visual Culture, & Critical Theory at Columbia College in Chicago. This lecture starts at 11am today at Intuit (756 N Milwaukee) and is free and open to the public.
Windy City Rollers Bout 3 @ UIC Pavilion
The Windy City Rollers have their third bout of the season today at the UIC Pavilion (525 South Racine). This go-round pits the Hell's Belles vs. Manic Attackers and the Double Crossers vs. The Fury. Doors open at 5pm, with game play starting at 6pm. Get your tickets here or at the door.
Flip Madness Tournament @ Mad River Bar & Grille
Grab your friends (or just bring yourself) to the first ever Flip Madness Flip Cup Tournament to benefit Rock for Kids (a very cool non-profit in Chicago that provides music education for at-risk youth). Teams of four will compete in a bracketed tournament today at Mad River from 2-5pm. Registration is $30/person and will get you beer, pizza, pasta, and salad all afternoon. Performing will be the DJs Fabulous Ladies of Fitness. There's also a costume contest where the winner will get a first-round bye! Registration available online (and is highly encouraged). Children's Spring Sale @ Eugene Field Park Fieldhouse
This first-ever "parent-to-parent" sale will offer used children's clothing, toys, books and other items at Eugene Field Park in the Albany Park neighborhood. Admission is free. Details, as well as how you can sign up to be a seller, here. The sale runs from 9am-1pm at 5100 N. Ridgeway (near Foster Ave. and Pulaski Rd.). Proceeds benefit the Eugene Field Park Advisory Council's community events and park purchases.
