Fundraiser Show for the Chicago Riots

Head to Reggie's (2109 S. State St.) to check out a show to raise funds for the Chicago Riots, the all-new local junior roller derby league. The Runnies, Hollows, and 8-Inch Betsy play. The show runs 7-10 p.m., $8 door, all ages.

"Harold's Chicago" @ Harold Washington Library Center

The Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State St., presents "Harold's Chicago: How Mayor Washington Changed the Face of the City," tonight from 6pm-7pm. Join Lee Bey, Executive Director, Chicago Central Area Committee, as he discusses the "urban planning and public works initiatives" for Chicago as laid out by the late mayor. Music for Matisse @ The Art Institute

World Kitchen Learning Series: Get into the Kitchen

Learn basic cooking skills at this four-part class. which is part of the World Kitchen learning series offered by the City of Chicago. Class runs 6-8:30pm at Gallery 37 for the Arts, 55 East Randolph. Pre-registration required; admission is $30. Future classes are April 22 and 29.

Windy City Burlesque Fest's Opening Night @ Blue Bayou

Hold on to your pasties and tighten your corset, Vaudezilla and Belmont Burlesque is bringing American burlesque back where it all began with the Windy City Burlesque Fest! The three day event begins tonight with an opening night party at the Blue Bayou (3734 N Southport Avenue) featuring two tassel-shaking shows at 10pm and 11:30pm. The free shows include performances from over a dozen bawdy broads including Hollywood's Penny Starr Jr, New Orleans' Perle Noire, Vancouver's Madame Mae I, and several of Chicago's shimming stars. Stephen T. Asma @ Barnes and Noble

If you're in need of some calm this tax day, Barnes and Noble downtown is hosting Columbia College professor Stephen T. Asma tonight. He'll be reading from his new book Why I Am a Buddhist: No-Nonsense Buddhism With Red Meat and Whiskey . As the title suggests, Asma's aim is to "take the humorless brown rice eaters...the California, out of Buddhism. If a guy like me can be a Buddhist...trust me, there's room for you." In addition to personal anecdotes about his own spiritual journey, there are down-to-earth explanations of reincarnation, karma, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and how Buddhism differs from Hinduism.
