Tonight, DePaul professor Daniel Stolar (who, incidentally, gets a red chili pepper for "hot professor" on ratemyprofessors.com), reads from new fiction tonight. His previous work includes the 2003 short story collection The Middle of the Night. Set in his hometown of St. Louis, where his mother was an alderman for eight years, Publishers Weekly says of The Middle of the Night: "it revolves around the continual surprises life springs on us when we are least expecting them...these stories are intelligently written, thoughtful, precise and memorable." The Empty Bottle plays host tonight to Athens, promoting their latest release What Would We Wear Were We Werewolves (an album that also doubles as a handy tongue-twister). Come join us tonight at the Woodlawn Collaborative, 6400 S Kimbark Ave -Porter Room, 1st Floor from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, to watch Dziga Vertov's Man With a Movie Camera. It is an experimental 1929 silent documentary drawing from the ferment of the international socialist revolutions of 1917 to 1923. A discussion will follow. Free pizza will be served. Chet Nichols performs at the Museum of Contemporary Art tonight as part of The Secret History of Chicago Music exhibition in the USB 12 x 12 gallery. Performance begins at 7pm. Museum admission is free on Tuesdays. 220 E. Chicago Ave.
The screening of The Freedom of Fence highlights the history of Polish poster design. This 40 minute documentary in SAIC's Rubloff Auditorium is followed by a presentation by one of the film's feature artists, Rafal Olbinski. Mr. Olbinski is a master Polish-American painter and poster maker. From 6pm to 8pm, $20 for general admission and $10 for students.
At The Jazz Showcase, 806 S. Plymouth, sets at 8pm and 10pm. John Goldman, Chicago altoist, and his band Quaderangle celebrate the release of their new album Outside the Box. Outside the Box has been heralded as an eclectic fusion of jazz and psychedelia. This performance will feature guests from the album such as Leslie Beukelman, Kendall Moore and Victor Garcia, a Latin jazz trumpeter. For general admission, tickets are $10 and $5 dollars for students and musicians.
