Facets Night School: Teeth

Facets Cinematheque presents Facets Night School, a weekly series of midnight screenings paired up with lectures, discussions, and much more. Tonight's screening: the 2007 horror film Teeth, a literal tale of the vagina dentata urban legend. ChristMisfits in July @ Lily's

The Misfits tribute band ChristMisfits plays tonight with guests TurboVamps at Lily's (2513 N. Lincoln). The lyrics to the ChristMisfits' songs are altered from the originals, the enthusiasm is not. Grindhouse @ Film Center

The Gene Siskel Film Center continues their Quentin Tarantino retrospective with a screening of the 2007 Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez project Grindhouse, featuring two films by both directors along with a bunch of amazing fake trailers in between the two main features. Author Talk: Michelle Alexander @ The Black Star Project

Michelle Alexander, former director of the Racial Justice Project of the ACLU in Northern California, has just finished a book entitled The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. She will be giving a lecture on this topic at 3:30pm at Hartzell United Methodist Church, 3330 S. King Dr., where books will be available for purchase and autographs. Folk & Roots Festival @ Welles Park

The Old Town School of Folk Music presents their annual two-day festival of music and dance in Welles Park (Lincoln and Montrose) this weekend. Today's main stage lineup includes: The Midwest Fiddle Championship; Hoyle Brothers; James King Band; Red Stick Ramblers; Gingarte Capoeria Chicago in the Park; Occidental Brothers, featuring Samba Mapangala; Shemekia Copeland; and Budos Band. The Cardboard Show Opens @ Co-Prosperity Sphere

Mike Pocius organized and hosts this works on carboard group exhibition. This community art project shows works made on cardboard only! The opening reception is tonight from 6-11pm. The Poetry Brothel @ House of Blues Foundation Room

The Poetry Brothel, a poets/artists/designers organization, is setting up shop in the House of Blues Foundation Room (329 N. Dearborn) tonight from 8pm to midnight. This event series incorporates a bit of performance art as the showcased poets...well...seduce you. Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 if you bring along the flier. Stop by and enjoy poetry + absinthe + music + anything else you may expect at a brothel.

POP! Fest @ Rock Bottom

Rock Bottom Brewery in Warrenville (28256 Diehl Road) will host the unveiling of a malt liquor made from popcorn today at their POP! Fest. Tickets are $15 and include a souvenir glass and tastings from Goose Island and Flossmoor. Event runs 1-5pm.

Beast Women @ Greenhouse Theater Center

Opening tonight at 10:30pm and running through August 22nd at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. Beast Women showcases female strength, beauty and individuality through sexy, cutting edge and thought-provoking performances. Two-Hour Comedy Hour @ Gallery Cabaret

This week's Two-Hour Comedy Hour will be hosted by Trey Mowder, and features comedians Brendan McGowan, Aaron Weaver, Casey Ley, Ryan Walker and Matt McInnis. This free show features a fresh mix of comedians each week. No cover, 21+ -- though a $5 donation is accepted -- runs from 7-9pm at Gallery Cabaret, 2020 N. Oakley (near Western and Milwaukee, just off the Blue Line stop). Guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Roscoe Village Burger Fest

The Belmont Arts and Music Fest has been resurrected as a weekend-long homage to the Earl of Hamburg's favorite meal. The Roscoe Village Burger Fest features a very 90s-heavy music lineup (10,000 Maniacs, Gin Blossoms), drinking, general street fair shenanigans, and of course, burgers. Runs today and tomorrow, noon to 10pm, at Belmont and Damen.

L.A.T.E. Ride

Cool off from the summer heat at the L.A.T.E. Ride, an organized bike ride (note: it's not a race!) through the city that starts around midnight Sunday (technically!) at Buckingham Fountain and ends at Grant Park around sunrise. Food and drink stations and a post-ride pancake breakfast follow. Entry fee $40 ($45 day of).
