Learn the basics of cooking and kitchen navigation at tonight's class, offered through the World Kitchen Learning Series. Class is at Gallery 37, 66 East Randolph. Admission is $100 for four total classes (tonight and January 13, 20 and 27).
Diane Torr will be at Women and Children First this Thursday to talk about Sex, Drag and Male Roles: Investigating Gender as Performance, co-written with Stephen J. Bottoms. Torr is a pioneer in the drag king scene and has been performing since 1976. She's been featured on HBO, BBC, and NPR and runs "Man for a Day" workshops internationally. Anna Burnside of living.scotsman.com says Torr "pok[es] a sharp feminist stick into issues of gender and identity, showing women that male superiority was as much of a construct as a fake willy." Story Club, a monthly storytelling series, combines the spontaneity of an open mic with featured readings at Uncommon Ground (3800 N. Clark). Tonight's featured readers are Deanna Moffitt and Scott Whitehair, of the monthly reading series This Much Is True. Open mic sign-up at 8pm, go time at 8:30. This event is free. The Old Town School of Folk Music presents the latest in their series of one-day workshops for music and dance students. Tonight's workshop is a Mexican accordion class taught by Roberto Serrato, a fixture of Chicago's Norteño scene. Students should bring their own instruments. The workshop happens this evening from 6pm to 7:20pm at the school's main building (4544 N. Lincoln Avenue). The cost is $20, and you can register at the Old Town School Website.
