New Chicago Comics @ MCA

It's a sequential art kind of January at the Museum of Contemporary art. Today through January 30th, the museum features comic book artists and animators both known and rising -- Jeffrey Brown, Lilli Carré, Paul Hornschemeier, and Anders Nilsen showcase their differing yet equally interesting styles. 220 E. Chicago Ave. $12 suggested admission (free Tuesdays). More information here.

A Certain Ratio Opens @ Roots & Culture

The five artists in A Certain Ratio (Elijah Burgher, Ryan Fenchel, Jonah Groeneboer, Shane Huffman, and Erin Zona) engage abstraction to investigate classic philosophical inquiries -- where math intersects with science, religion and art. A reduction of form to symbolic or geometrical composition imparts their work with a depth of mystical pursuit. The opening reception for this exhibition is tonight from 6pm to 9pm at Roots and Culture: 1034 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Talia Chetrit, Daniel Gordon, & Matthew Metzger Exhibitions Open @ Tony Wight Gallery

In the north gallery, two young photographers (Talia Chetrit and Daniel Gordon) show collaborative work that utilizes the studio as a site of production. While there is an evident parallel between their practices -- both artists compose and photograph temporal situations in their studios -- this exhibition aims to articulate divergences as well as similarities. In the south gallery, three paintings by Matthew Metzger explore the dependency and exchangeability within Figuration and Abstraction as a method to portray the liminal and fleeting qualities that compose aspects of being. The opening reception for these exhibitions is tonight from 5pm to 8pm at Tony Wight Gallery: 845 W. Washington.
