Facets Cinematheque continues its Facets Night School series tonight with a screening of the 1971 movie Hannie Caulder with Raquel Welch and Robert Culp. The film will be accompanied by a lecture/discussion from author & teacher Michelle Zaladonis. Montreal's post-rock titans Godspeed You Black Emperor have infuriated fans with punctuation alterations and political diatribes, but there is no denying that during their heyday they stood out from the field by making some of the most engaging experimental instrumental rock music of the era. After a hiatus, they've now reconvened for some live shows. Tonight marks the first of three in Chicago. Godspeed You Black Emperor headlines Metro. Eric Chenaux opens at 9pm. The Culinary Historians of Chicago (CHC) sponsor a lecture on two different but interesting topics: whether hunger played a role in ending the Civil War, and the history of the potato. At the helm is historian Andy Smith, editor of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America. Event begins at 10am at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 North Clark.
