Matt Crews and Raul Cotaquispe @ Uncommon Ground on Clark

Matt Crews, who curated Uncommon Ground's residency in January, is an active poet whose poetic lyrics are enhanced by expressive nylon-string fingerstyle and a voice which recalls Andrew Bird's gypsy jazz stylings from the late '90s. Raul Cotaquispe is well known in the musician community as a versatile multi-instrumentalist and tasteful collaborator on percussion and guitar, and frequently appears at house concerts throughout the city. They perform tonight at Uncommon Ground (1214 W. Grace). Also appearing will be musician Rob Reid, whose songs draw from an eclectic range of world genres and describe colorful characters involved in endeavors such as riding public transit in West Africa, surviving lightning strikes, and holding up banks. Show starts at 8pm.
For more info visit Uncommon Ground or call 773-929-3680.

The Moth Storyslam @ Martyrs

Martyrs and The Moth present the monthly story slam tonight at 8pm. Ten people picked from the audience will each tell a 5-minute story, with tonight's winner earning a place in the Grandslam Championships. Tickets are only available at the door, so show up REALLY early for this event. Martyrs: 3855 N. Lincoln. (773) 404-9494.

"Unschooling Arts Education" SALON @ threewalls

If you've been craving some serious art talk but don't have the loot to go to art school, stop by threewalls tonight (or across the hallway at Western Exhibitions, rather) for their "Unschooling Arts Education" SALON-- part of their monthly, (free!) super-educational and interactive discussion series. This event is from 7 to 9pm tonight at Western Exhibitions: 119 N Peoria St., unit 2A. Admissions is free and open to the public. More info here. Super-specific all-encompassing details with supplementary readings and profiles of the guest speakers here.

Josh Alan Friedman @ Quimby's

If you missed him at Bookman's Alley last weekend, Josh Alan Friedman (Black Cracker) will also be at Quimby's tonight. Black Cracker is the story of Friedman's childhood at New York's last segregated school in the early '60s. L.A. Weekly says "Friedman splits sides, breaks hearts and always remains ruthlessly honest about the real world, a place that doesn't conform to the politically correct wishes of liberals or conservatives." Friedman will also be performing on acoustic guitar. Quimby's, 1854 W. North Ave., 7pm.
