The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents the 1938 film The Young In Heart at the Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., tonight at 7:30pm. Admission is $5.
If the words "spelling bee" bring to mind grade school grudges (you purposely misheard me, Sister Ann!), here's your chance for a do-over amongst friends and well-crafted beer. Head out to the Rocking Horse in Logan Square tonight for the Spleling Be, brought to you by the Louisville, Kentucky-based Idea Festival. You can compete in teams of up to three people; if one team member wears a bee suit, you get a round of immunity, meaning you can misspell one word and remain in the competition. The winner(s) get handmade trophies and all-access passes to the Idea Festival (worth $400 each) held this September. Similar to TED Talks, The Idea Festival has been bringing together leading thinkers in science, the arts, business, design, technology, education, medicine and more in a heady cocktail of ideas since 2000. Yes, redeeming the passes will involve travel to the Bluegrass State (road trip!). Rocking Horse, 2535 N Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60647 (773) 486-0011. Sign-up starts at 7:30, spelling bee starts at 8:30. Free.
Danish rock duo the Raveonettes pull influence from garage rock and shoegaze. They'll play in support of their new album, Raven in the Grave. Opener Tamaryn creates comparisons to a lo-fi Mazzy Star or Slowdive. The show starts at 9pm, is 21+ and $18. Lincoln Hall's at 2424 N Lincoln.
For all you beer historians out there, go and celebrate the end of Prohibition at this special edition of New Beer's Eve. Enjoy four courses of modern-day comfort food paired with beer and spirits from Chicago and Michigan. You can also partake in a history course on Midwest bootlegging with Jon Eig, author of Get Capone. The event starts at 7pm at Socca (3301 N. Clark Street). Tickets are $65 for nonmembers, $60 for members.
Get your slurp on at this weekly fundraiser for area food-related charities tonight at the Hideout, 1354 West Wabansia, from 5:30-7:30pm. A volunteer team of chefs and bakers donate the soup and bread; you donate the money. This week, Drive-Thru staffers are among the soup-makers!
