You probably know him best as the author of Devil in the White City, but tonight he's back discussing In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, the story of mild-mannered William E. Dodd, first ambassador to Nazi Germany, his free-spirited daughter Martha, and their trip from Chicago to the odd, tenuous and (it goes without saying) dark world of 1933 Berlin. 400 S State St, 6pm. Free.
He goes by many monikers-Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace Music, and Palace Brothers but either way, mastermind of the indie folk frontier Will Oldham will be starting off the Downtown Sound: New Music Mondays Series with what is sure to be an interesting and memorable night. All performances including this one are free and start at 6:30 with The Cairo Gang opening.
Avant-garde jazz group Starlicker and contemporary percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani perform at the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theatre, 78 W. Washington Ave., tonight at 6:30pm as part of the Cultural Center's free New Music Mondays series. More info here.
Rabble Rabble, We Are Hex and Distractions play the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., tonight at 9:30pm. Free show, but 21+.
