Ben Tanzer (You Can Make Him Like You) and David Masciotra (Working on a Dream: The Progressive Political Vision of Bruce Springsteen) read at The Book Cellar tomorrow night. There are promises of "interpretive dance numbers and a laser light show of uncertain proportions." Book Cellar, 4736 N Lincoln Ave., Thursday, May 26 at 7pm.
David "Honeyboy" Edwards and Billy Branch perform at the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St., at noon today as part of the Blues Festival preview event "Speaking of the Blues." Free.
If you've ever thought modern dance suffered from a lack of magic tricks and booty shaking, this may change your mind. We Stand Sideways performs "Ta Da! The Assistant's Revenge," playing off the well-worn trope of the magician's assistant to explore objectification and gender equality. If that sounds too heavy, rest assured there will also be nudity (!), though it's not clear if anyone will be sawed in half. Two nights only! $12 at the door, $10 for artists, The Underground Lounge, 952 W. Newport Ave., (773) 327-2739. Show starts at 10pm.
