Ladyfest Midwest 10th Anniversary Celebration

This weekend Ladyfest Midwest celebrates its 10-year anniversary with a weekend of events happening around the city. Tonight, the celebration is at Late Bar (3534 W. Belmont), where DJs Sam O'Rama, Emily Augustin and Rebecca Crawford will be playing music from 10pm to 4am. It's a 21+ show, and admission is a suggested $5 donation. The Silent Film Society of Chicago presents The Cardboard Lover@ Portage Theater

The 2011 Silent Summer Film Festival presents the comedy The Cardboard Lover, a 1928 film directed by Robert Z. Leonard, accompanied by a special screening of the 1924 short Mighty Like A Moose, which stars Cherley Chase. The Cardboard Lover stars Marion Davies having the time of her life on the French Riviera. Film starts at 8pm. Live organ accompaniment by Tim Baker. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Independence Day @ The Music Box Theatre

There are just two weeks left in the Music Box's Summer Blockbuster Midnight series. Tonight it's the 1996 alien invasion flick Independence Day, starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldbum. The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T @ Music Box

"Is it ... is it ATOMIC?" The Music Box Theatre presents a weekend screening of the Dr. Seuss live-action musical The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T as part of their summer children's matinee series. Chicago Ice Cream & Gelato Festival

The Chicago Ice Cream & Gelato Festival runs from 6pm to 9pm both Thursday and today at the Grand Piazza at the National Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame, 1431 W. Taylor St. Sample ice cream and gelato made by regional "micro-creameries" including Canady le Chocolatier, Graeter's of Ohio, Homer's Ice Cream, Hudsonville Creamery, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, Mitchell’s Soda Shop, Polyscience (makers of the Anti-griddle), Shawn Michelle's Ice Cream and Zingerman’s Creamery -- plus demos by several pastry chefs and some non-dairy desserts and drinks as well. Jeni Britton Bauer will sign copies of her new book, Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home, both nights. Admission is $25 in advance or at the door; children are $10.

Little City Book Fair @ Harper College

Book lovers with a car should consider making the trek to Harper College in Palatine (about 15 minutes Northwest of O'Hare) for the Little City Book Fair which boasts, "hundreds of thousands of new and gently used books," as well as CDs and DVDs, all for between 50 cents and $5. 10$ donation to get in Friday (5pm - 10), but free on Saturday (10am - 9pm) and Sunday (10am - 5pm).
