The Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., holds its second annual Chili-Synth Cookoff tonight at 7pm. Taste the chili and enjoy synthesizer-based music by Jeremiah Fischer, Deep Earth, Anthony Janas, Jeff Host and Rolan Vega. Beau Wanzer and Brett Naucke share hosting duties. Admission is $4. 21+
The Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., screens gross-out Troma classic The Toxic Avenger today at 6:30pm. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for kids (but best not to bring them).
The Music Box Theatre presents a special screening of the Barbara Kopple documentary Harlan County USA this afternoon at 1:30pm. The screening will be co-hosted by Kartemquin Films director Steve James and author Robert K. Elder. As a bonus, James will also be screening his recent Kartemquin documentary The Interrupters. MeSoFar is hosting its very first LGBT event on Feb. 19th at the Den Theatre, 1333 N. Milwaukee Ave. The event will feature 10 single "presenters" who will each give six-minute slideshows about themselves to 50 other single audience members. Speakers and listeners mingle during and after the presentations. The speakers are already lined up but there are still some spots open for listeners. Sign up here.
