Facets Cinemathequepresents its 10th session of Facets Night School screenings paired with lectures & discussions about the films. Tonight's film is the 2000 horror film Shadow of the Vampire. Discussion of the film will be led by Facets Night School regular Cary Elza. Facets Night School runs Saturday evenings through April 21; the lectures begin at midnight with a $5 fee. Red Balls, a film chronicling the (fictional) exploits of the Chicago Underground Dodgeball League, premieres tonight at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., at 10:30pm. Tickets are $10.
The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., presents a return by the director of The Room, Tommy Wiseau, for a special screening of Wiseau's cult classic. For this screening Wiseau will also be joined by cast member Greg Sestero. Local band Jonas Friddle & The Majority celebrate the release of their CD at The Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia) tonight at 8pm. Their sound has been described as "orchestral folk", and features a string section, brass, organ, banjo and drums. Also appearing tonight are Tangleweed and Ami Moss & The Unfortunate. Punker rockers with a pop twist I Am The Avalanche headline Subterranean tonight fresh off the release of their second album, Avalanche United. It's the first for this Brooklyn-based quintet since their self-titled debut in 2006. Lead signer Vinnie Caruana's voice might sound familiar to fans of The Movielife (defunct since the early 2000s). Openers are Hostage Calm and Red City Radio. It's an early show and starts at 5:30pm. All ages will be admitted. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Subterranean is located at 2011 W. Urban Folk Circuit brings its crafty goodness to Reggie's Rock Club, 2109 S. State St., today from noon to 5pm. More than 20 local artisans will be selling their wares, and The Magic Child and Nathaniel Matthew perform. Free to attend. More info on Facebook.
From 10am to 3pm today and Sunday, the North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N. Pulaski Rd., holds its annual Maple Syrup Festival. Watch the entire maple syrup-making process from tapping the tree to collect sap to boiling it down into syrup. Taste the final product, make maple-based crafts, and enjoy the Nature Center's grounds. Free.
