"Pretty Semitic: Laughing from Right to Wrong"

Zanie's, 1548 N. Wells St., presents "Pretty Semitic: Laughing from Right to Wrong," a night of standup featuring Jewish comedian Jess Salomon and Palestinian comedian Eman. Mona of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival hosts, and Liza Treyger opens. Tickets are $20 online or at the door; two drink/food item minimum. 21+

Gumbo Fiction Salon

Thursday May 17 the Gumbo Fiction Salon, a reading series welcome to all genres of fiction followed by an open mic, sponsors a fundraiser for the John Schultz and Betty Shiflett Story Workshop Scholarship fund at Columbia College. All readers are Columbia College Fiction Writing faculty, alums, or students including Jeff Jacobson, Patricia Rosemoor, Geoff Hyatt, Jenine Arteaga, Ellis Wylie, John Dowds, and Michelle Cachey.

$4 cover, $2 for students, with this month offering two-for-one admission. The event is upstairs at the Galway Arms Irish Pub 2442 N. Clark beginning at 7pm.

Daniel Clowes signing @ Quimby's

Quimby's Bookstore, 1854 W. North Ave., welcomes back renowned artist Daniel Clowes, subject of the new book The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist, for a book signing tonight at 7pm.

Granta Magazine @ The Book Cellar

Granta magazine is in Chicago tonight with the launch of their latest issue Granta 119: Britain. Featured contributors Tania James, Atlas of Unknowns, and Gary Younge will be reading from their work.

Readings will be held at The Book Cellar, 4736 N. Lincoln Ave @ 7pm.

Mayer Hawthorne @ Park West

Singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Mayer Hawthorne will be taking the stage at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage Ave, on May 17, sharing some of the revamped vintage goodness from his latest album, How Do You Do. Music begins at 7:30pm with The Stepkids. 18+

The Yolanda Project @ Young Chicago Authors

Tonight, Young Chicago Authors presents the Yolanda Showcase. A fan art show of sorts, the show features original work inspired by the character Yolanda from the gospel musical Crowns. Performers include finalists from the Louder Than A Bomb competition. The free showcase will take place at Young Chicago Authors, 1180 N. Milwaukee Ave. from 6-8pm.
