Neighborhood Writing Alliance is hosting an evening of performance art and creative expression featuring adult students from their writing workshops. The theme is "Body Wisdom" and will focus on movement, creating community and sharing personal stories. The event is free and open to the public from 6-8pm tonight at the Pritzker Auditorium at Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State.
Prohibition was repealed 79 years ago today--a perfect reason to head to the Chicago History Museum for Cocktails and Capone, which will be an evening of history and fine, fine drinking; Deirdre Capone (great-niece of dear old Al) will be on hand to discuss her infamous relative, along with CHM's John Russick, who will give a nifty history lesson about Prohibition. To top off the festivities, Templeton Rye--the legendary Iowa-based whiskeymakers whose brand was boosted by Capone--will be serving up their finest. What's not to love? Event runs 6-9pm at the CHM, 1601 N Clark; admission $30-40.
The Chicago chapter of the American Red Cross hosts its Ring in the Red fundraiser at Bar Louie River North, 335 N. Dearborn St., from 6pm to 9pm. Admission is $20 in advance, $30 at the door, and includes a free glass of wine and appetizers.
Stuttgart -- featuring former members of Smashing Pumpkins, the Cupcakes , Tribal Opera and Cassius Clay -- makes its debut tonight at the Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake St., with Butterfly Child and Niel Jendon. Tickets are $8. Doors open at 7pm, show's at 8pm. 17+
The Northwest Chicago Film Society presents Upstream, director John Ford's "lost" silent film, tonight at 7:30pm at the Portage Theatre, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., with live organ accompaniment. Tickets are $5 at the door.
Chicago Slam Works presents the first of three "Dead or Alive" performances at The Raven Theatre (6157 N. Clark), featuring actors portraying deceased poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks (Paulette McDaniels), Langston Hughes (Shannon Matesky), Etheridge Knight (Jared Grant), Jonathan Swift (Robbie Q. Telfer), and Anne Sexton (Rebecca Levine). The actors will perform the poems in a mock slam against Chicago poets Sage Morgan Hubbard, Raych Jackson, Kevin Kern, Sharrieff Muhammad, Emily Rose and Fatimah Asghar.
