Al Scorch's Winter Slumber @ Empty Bottle

Join local banjo player Al Scorch and friends this afternoon for the second installment of Al Scorch's Winter Slumber residency at the Empty Bottle. Scorch invites special guests from the area to improvise new songs and try new arrangements on old songs. Admission is free, and the music begins at 2pm. Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western Ave.

Voice of Champions reading @ Dan's Soul Food

Today, author Kelly Porter Turner (Perfectly Planned) hosts Voice of Champions/Silence No More Movement: Inspiring and Empowering the Wounded Souls at Dan's Soul Food (2523 W. 79th St.). Five men and five women will share stories of childhood abuse to promote healing and remove shame. Entertainment by Blaq Ice and P.O.E.T.. 4pm to 9pm; tickets are $10 and include dinner.

Derek Fawcett @ Schubas

Derek Fawcett celebrates the release of his new album, The Winter Clothes, with a show tonight at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave. Julia Klee opens. Tickets are $12, or pay $18 and get a copy of The Winter Clothes too. Doors open at 7pm.

Vultress @ Subterranean

Valparaiso prog-metal band Vultress celebrates the release of its latest album at the Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave., tonight. Miles from Exile and Lost in Blue open. Doors are at 8pm, show's at 8:30. Tickets are $10 online or at the door. 17+
