YarnCon

YarnCon, "Chicago's indie fiber fair," runs today and Sunday at the Journeymen Plumbers Union Hall, 1340 W. Washington St. Shop for yarn, patterns and accessories, or take a workshop. The show is open today from 11am to 4pm. Admission is free; some workshops have a registration fee.

Carmen & Geoffrey @ DuSable Museum

The DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th Pl., presents Carmen & Geoffrey, the story of American dance legends Carmen DeLavallade and Geoffrey Holder, today from 2pm-4pm. The dance footage documentary, in conjunction with the museum's "Geoffrey & Carmen: A Memoir in Four Movements" exhibit, highlights the couple's work with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker and more. Out of the Vault: Meet Mort & Millie

The Chicago Film Archives presents Meet More & Millie, a program of short films by graphic designers Mort and Millie Goldsholl, in the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater, 78 E. Washington St., at 3pm today. Amy Beste, who recently authored a chapter on the Goldsholls in Chicago Makes Modern: How Creative Minds Changed Society, will introduce the program, and a panel discussion with Victor Margolin, professor emeritus of Design History at UIC; Susan Keig, designer and former vice president of the Design Department at Goldsholl Design and Film Associates; and Wayne Boyer, filmmaker and professor emeritus at UIC, will follow the screening. Admission is free.

Mary Driver-Thiel @ Women and Children First

This afternoon, Mary Driver-Thiel reads from The World Undone at Women and Children First (5233 N. Clark St.). It's the story of Sylvia, a woman who goes in search of her sister Callie, given up for adoption, and how their lives and their mother's are changed when Sylvia goes in search of Callie. 4:30pm.

OperaRocks @ Monastero's

Verismo Opera Theater presents OperaRocks, a dinner and "unconventional opera" performance, at Monastero's Ristorante & Banquets, 3935 W. Devon Ave., tonight from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door.

Windy City Gay Idol

The 11th edition of Windy City Gay Idol kicks off tonight at the Sofo Tap, 4923 N. Clark St. Registration opens at 8pm, competition starts at 9pm. Signup is $10; admission for audience members is $5. 21+
