Blonde Art Books @ Hyde Park Art Center
New York-based Blonde Art Books is sponsoring a summer tour with a stop at the Hyde Park Art Center, 5020 S. Cornell Ave., tonight at 5:30pm. Chicago artists, writers and presses that will be presenting at the event include SHIFTER, Cassandra Troyan, Soberscove, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Lumpen magazine, Green Lantern Press, Temporary Services and Half Letter Press. Green City Market Chef BBQ
The Green City Market's annual Chef's BBQ Benefit is tonight from 5:30 to 8pm at the south end of Lincoln Park, near 1815 N. Clark St. Enjoy food prepared by some of the city's top chefs -- and this year, there's also Green City Cocktails to go along with the food (the bar is open from 5 to 8). Tickets are $125 or $250 for VIP admission; kids under 12 get in for $25.
Savages, Parquet Courts @ Lincoln Hall (Sound Opinions taping)
A pairing of much buzzed-about bands from both sides of the Atlantic, namely London's hyper-serious Savages and Brooklyn psych-punkers Parquet Courts, will appear as part of a live taping of WBEZ's Sound Opinions in anticipation of each group's set at Pitchfork. Interviews from hosts Jim Derogatis and Greg Kot are planned, along with live performances from each band. Tickets are available July 1, via the Sound Opinions website.
Great Lakes Review Launch Issue 2 @ Columbia College
Chicago contributors will be reading their fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from Great Lakes Review issue 2 tonight at Columbia College. The event takes place at 618 S Michigan Ave, 4th floor from 7pm - 8:30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
Jay Pharoah @ Zanies
Zanies Comedy Club, 1548 N. Wells, presents "Saturday Night Live's" Jay Pharoah, tonight at 7:30pm. Pharoah, who just wrapped up his third SNL season, is best known for his impression of President Barack Obama and also for his spot-on celebrity impressions of well-known figures like Denzel Washington, ESPN's Stephen A. Grown Folks Stories @ Silver Room
Come to the Silver Room (1442 N. Milwaukee) for this month's Grown Folks Stories, the open-mic storytelling bonanza hosted by Cara Brigandi. Put your name in the jar for the chance to tell a 5 minute off book (no notes) story. BYOB and free, this event runs more like a talk show/comedy showcase/community storytelling night than anything else. Stories start at 8pm.
